I found a near perfect truck I'd like to purchase, but worried about the transmission. It has an Allison 4060HD 6-speed automatic, and although I'm familiar with the driving characteristics of Allison Tranny's, I'm wondering about whether this truck could do the job I'd need it to do, or have shortcomings.
I'd need this truck to haul no more than 90k Gross, over distances no more than a few hundred miles, sometimes on steep hills, but very rarely. I'm wondering if this transmission has enough gears, and also, if the lack of gears would give extremely poor fuel mileage with heavy loads on the longer trips.
Any thoughts?

I've been thinking of putting an Allison 4700 RDS in my next truck to haul 140,000 super b. Some off road, mostly highway. The 4700 has an extra low gear for start ability, but the rest may be similar to yours.
The only challenge I see is the jump from 4th to 5th in the 30-50 mph range. I tried it out with my 18 spd by skipping gears to match what the Allison would be doing. I have a 560 hp 1,850 tq DD15, it actually pulls it off just fine on a level road, I can see it could be a challenge on an incline with a cross wind.
RR Plett trucking in British Columbia has switched a lot of their fleet to Allison pulling tandems and tri-axles through the mountains. The one driver I talked to was pleased with it.
I suppose it depends on what rear ratio that truck has. A lot of them have something in the 5.06 plus range. I figured a 4.63 or 4.83 would work for me. -

It will do you just fine. Check out the rest of the videos on their youtube channel, plenty of companies with tractor trailers running the Allison with smaller power plants.

I had the opportunity to drive one across the country at 80,000 lbs. That truck had a 650 hp ISX 07 EPA engine with a 6 speed Allison behind it. The truck did good. They tend to run higher RPMs while crusing at interstate speeds which will in turn lower your fuel mileage. I was running 70mph with it so I will refrain from commenting on the mpg I got with it. The only thing I have an issue with is the engine brakes. The truck will downshift when ever you let off the throttle with the engine brakes on.

This is my thing...the fuel MPG. I figure fewer gears = poor mpg. I've had a vehicle with an Allison previously, but it was a light-weight configuration and used for new drivers. I really would like to know what kind of MPG you received at 70MPH...I mainly drive that speed and need to know how this truck would work in my fleet, if so. Also, curious if the MPG you receive is on hills, or what. Thanks
