Anyone know much about the Mack E-460 engine. Like the one that comes in a 2001 vision. Example; good points and bad points.
I am considering buying one of these but I know they have some problems as well. Thanks

It's Mack's E-7 motor, so it's about a 720 CID engine, same one they have down into the 355 hp rating, and it may be rated below that in some applications. 460 is the top hp rating on it, and about as far as I would want to go with that size engine. Good points are that you can have the higher hp engine without paying any weight penalties, they are relatively maint free, and provide decent power and mileage. In the last 4 years I have driven them, with up to 650k on my own company trucks. Lost one turbocharger at about 515k on one truck, had the bolts holding the fuel injector unit to the side of the block break and had to be towed in for repairs. there is an upgraded bolt available and they were installed. Other than that, they have been a fairly bulletproof motor. We have a couple in our fleet that have well past 1.5 million miles on them and they are still all original, never had any major repairs done.

My current 2006 Vision has 186k on it, has had nothing except recommended engine maintenance done on it, same as the other 2006's in our fleet.

I would have to give them a thumbs up, based on my experience with them, and that counts for about half a million miles so far.

Thanks Burky, it sounds like yuo have been around them for a while. I drove one for about a year and I was always concerned about engine coolant/oil temps. They always got really high in the mountains. I mean during a hard climb. The oil temp would exceed 240 and set off the alarm unless I backed off and let her cool. Left me a little worried about blowing the thing up.

I didn't mention it because it wasn't an engine related failure, but I did have one truck that had to have the radiator replaced at about 500k or so. The truck started showing signs of heating and we found that the radiator had just about disintegrated. The materials in the newer ones are somewhat prone to corrosion from the various chemicals used on the roads, and that's what killed the one I had.
