I have 96 3406E that apparently has a bad ECM. I also have a parts motor here that I think it from a 98 3406E. Can we install the 98 ECM on the 96? Do I need to have it programmed first? My dealer is claiming that I need a new one for $3300 and that sounds very steep to me.

If both ecms have the same pin count they will interchange. The earlier one should be a 40 pin. The 98 may be a 70 pin. If the pins are the same check out the specs on each engine. You may need to contact a dealer for guidance. But reflashing should not be to castly.

should be 40 pin for both.(square looking plugs) just flash the program and go.

by what I'm gathering you've got a 5ek and a 2ws. If my mind serves me correctly a 40 Pin and a 70 pin platform. They won't swap you won't know without looking but I could have sworn a 2ws or the rare 6ts I believe was a 70 pin ecm

I am pretty sure you have a 5ek and a 1ws , ECM wise they both have the same part number , but need to be programmed , they don't have the same low nox programation
