I recently picked up a copy of Truck Trader, you know the book that has used trucks for sale, anyway I saw a lot of ads for Pete 379`s w/Extended hoods. I`m curious.....what is the purpose of extending the hood? Isn`t the truck big enough to begin with? Are Pete`s the only trucks that extend the hoods? Thanks.

Strictly for looks. Petes and Kenworths have always been the leaders, then years back Freightliner wanted in on the action and started making them as well.

Hoods are stretched to accomadate a big engine.

Also this extends the steering axle. This gives a smoother ride.

You can even get an extended hood in aerodynamic trucks...
    (Not exclusive to 379 Peterbilts)
And these extentions are for the same reasons--

#1 reason- To accomadate the Bigger Engines. :biggrin_255:

No it's not to accomadate bigger engines.

Nope, Pete and KW may have some of the most recognizable Long hoods on the road, but Western Stars, and Freightliner Classics have long/short hood trucks available. And even the Volvo 880 has a longer hood (than a 780 or 670 model); and it's mostly cosmetic, although in the Pete's case, it means the hood doesn't have a funny slope on the top (from the side view) it's just flat.

In addition to the merits of owning one, it also makes for a cool internet handle. [IMG]
