I've seen the .50 fix from some guys when it's cold...they cut a 12"X18" piece of cardboard more or less, and place it in front of the grill.
Cheap solution but works. Just make sure you don't make it too large or you'll get too hot.

And talking about white smoke? Whenever I get onto Route 422 at a certain entrance ramp (and only there), my little Subaru sputters like crazy and plumes of white smoke pour out the exhaust pipe. Reminds me of the old mosquito sprayers of years ago. But as soon as I level out on the highway, all returns to normal. I never had it looked at; I just figure I'm cleaning some kinda junk out of the engine. -
My C15 makes about 4 woof woofs when it first starts and pushes a fair bit of grey smoke on start up. Even when its at full operating temp.
At cold every truck I've driven sputters and blows white smoke. If they don't clear up or mostly clear up by 30 seconds then I might start to be concerned.
I'm not concerned about sputters and white smoke at a cold start up. -
Speaking of when it's cold...and a mechanical engine in particular. I've seen some guys spray the starter fluid like they were feeding a baby. I learned from an old timer not to over do this because the engine will get strung out like a hype. And you'll have use starting fluid more and more to get that engine running.

Hey Ducks, ever been to Rockledge?
-
Have you been there? -
That's where my mother-in-law was from. She took us back to Philly last year for a week. Went to the usual stuff in Philly. We went to Rockledge saw the apartments her dad built. The house he built. Had German food in town and then to Lancaster county/Amish country. My father-in-law is an Elks member. We got in the Lancaster Elks lodge. Nice, real nice. I'd live in PA too. Real nice. Wife's business is CA based (real estate education) so we're stuck in "Hotel California" for now anyways... -
Now, if only I could send ya' a cheesesteak... -
Ohh... you mentioned German food. I can get schnitz, too, if she wants to make schitz un knepp (dried apples, dumplings, and ham). My uncle lives in Florida and likes when he can get the good Lancaster County schnitz...
(Hey, it's true. I'm not kidding! LOL) -
To the original poster, dont worry about it, the truck will smoke white in cold weather untill it warms up. Reason why you see white smoke even after you cut it off and start it is unburned fuel, the motor is to cold to burn it all. A winter screen wont help in this case really, the motor will still be cold with the screen, it will take atleast a hour to warm up in cold weather just sitting idling with a screen on the radiator.
