A E model CAT will usually crack a coolant passage around the valve seat area and leak inside the motor. I have never seen a external leak between the block and head like a cummins motor. Way to see if you have a cracked head on a E model is after running it down the road, shut it off for 5 minutes, start it back up, if it smokes white like a tractor puller then you have a head problem. Most of them will crack a head before the head gasket will go as well.

If you have a compression check done, you may find one or more cylinders on the low side.
Low compression doesn't light the fuel and will produce white smoke, (unburned fuel),as soon as the cylinder gets a little heat in it, it starts firing and the smoke goes away, it usually doesn't take long and normally isn't a problem.

I have had the same problem before. Mine was a bad o-ring on a injector letting fuel leak down on top of a piston. Once the leaked fuel is burnt the white smoke stops.

Just had head done on an MBN.. cracked tween valves on #4. Would slowly push coolant out of overflow. Went several months like that, till I just drove it into shop and pulled head before it hydrolocked on me... No leak to the outside, and nothing dropped in the oil. Fixed it in time.

Sorry, but I had to respond to these old post I never saw. God, I miss Lebanon Bologna and Tastycakes. I grew up in Willow Street and Lititz if you know where they are. They just started selling Turkey Hill Iced Tea down here. I buy the shelf out everytime, lol. I talked the deli into selling Lebanon Bologna years back and nobody bought it but me so they stopped. #### rednecks didn't know what it was, lol. :) I love PA Dutch food too. I'm fond of chicken corn soup. My mother makes killer Veiner Schnitzel and her Rolandun is the best dish I ever had. Her Apple Strudel is killer too.

My mother was the head chef at the Lancaster BPOE Elks Lodge back in the mid 70's to early 80's. I washed a many dishes and bussed tables there when I was a kid. I'll never forget a private party they had upstairs one time. They had a partition blocking the door because they had a naked lady that was going to jump out of a cake. Anyways this non-english speaking dishwasher we had was standing on a chair peeking over the partition and when that naked lady jumped out of the cake he fell down and through the partition. I laughed so hard. Thanks for bringing them memories back. :)
