Hey guys I see all these threads about all these 3.90 rear gears etc. My truck is a 2000 freightshaker classic with at 430-470 detroit 13 speed and 2.93 rear gear. I run local only but mostly on interstate or 4 lane with about 20 stoplights over a 100 mile span (some you catch some you don't) I deadhead pretty much 50% of the time and seem to average 5.5 mpg no matter what. I am having a hard time seeing how everyone is seeing 6.5+ in other "large cars" with steeper gears. At 65 to 70 mph I am seeing 1350-1400 rpms and I feather the throttle religiously. I am aware of the fact that bogging a motor down can be just as wasteful as overrevving it (as far as fuel mileage goes) but I really don't feel as if this is the case with my stuff. Anyone have any thoughts??? Am I getting decent mileage for my situation or where can I make improvements?

Depends how heavy you are, id say 5.5 is not bad. With a 2.93 gear and 13 speed doing 65mph turning 1400rpm means you dont have overdrive. I have a 18 speed with 3.55s and turn just a tad over 1500 doing 75mph. And i get the same millage as you when doing 70mph, but i run heavy and through the mountains.

you most likely have a direct 13 speed not an overdrive.

Yep, I will agree. I know a guy who owns a junk yard, a JB truck came in with 2.93 rears. I was shocked. Then I found out it was a direct trans.
