    Peterbilt 372

    Does anyone have info (history, number built) on the Peterbilt 372 Cabover? I cam across a album full of pictures of these. I tried searching truckpaper yet they only show one. I do admit that I like the styling and aerodynamics on these. Heres a picture:

    they only made it a few years. Nobody would buy one because they were so ugly. You have to consider the time when they came out, it was REALLY shocking.
    I can't tell you how many they made or how long but there isn't many around at all.

    just a note for you. THey did some testing with that truck back in the day. It had a mechanical cat if I remember right, a van trailer with some funky aero treatments like lower skirting and a bellow between the truck and trailer. some really freaky futuristic looking stuff. Anyways, they were getting something like 10 or 11 mpg with it loaded.

    here is what wikipedia said

    372: Designed for high efficiency and driver comfort, this was the most aerodynamic Peterbilt cabover ever built. The nose piece of the cab flipped forward (similar to the old 350 COE of the 1950s) allowing access to maintenance items. 372 was in production from 1988 until 1993. The 372 proved that 10+ MPG can be achieved with a class 8 truck. The truck has the distinction of being the most unusual Peterbilt design offering a sinister Darth Vader look that some also though looked like a motorhome (think Winnebago) or a football helmet

    Thank you very much. The look of the 372 looks somewhat of futuristic T2000 COE that KW would build. Whats your opinion of them?

    they were ahead of there time. I reember seeing one new on the lot when I was younger and went with my pops to pick up a new truck. you don't forget it that's for sure.
    Personally I don't find it ugly but I do find it odd. I'd buy one but I do goofy stuff like that just to be different.
    there is one for sale in PA for 9500 bucks. 500k with no idle time it says since it has an onboard generator.

    who knows, with fuel prices like they are we may all be driving them soon. Who can argue with 10 mpg

    MM 10mpg sure beats 8mpg when towing with a pick up. You think a 372 will get 12-14 while bob-tailing?

    MM even though though I know jack didley about truck specs, I think you will agree if diesel keeps going up, most major truck manufactures will build COE again that get 9-12 mpg when spec'd right.

    I doubt very highly you will see truck manufacturers build cabovers again. drivers these days are spoiled rotten pansies in most cases and would never drive them. heck most these guys think they are roughing it if they don't have satalite radio and seat warmers. you will see hoods getshorter and narrower to the point that it may as well be a cabover. they will go to minimal protrusions off of the body and I would not personally be surprised to see boots between truck and trailer. I've personally always wondered why they don't have them already that is the major air disturbance on a truck. you will also see trailer skirting and tapered rear edges on the trailers like you are startig to see o some of the walmart trailers. of course you can only do that with roll door trailers not swing doors.

    Actually, a flat floor COE isn't that bad to get into or drive, I have driven a truck with a doghouse over the engine, that wasn't that bad either as long as you have enough room to sit up in the bunk. The Columbia already has the very short hood, it's very hard to work on the engine. A COE is actually easier to work on once you tilt the cab.
