Good, But given they both get the same mileage I would rather have the one that runs better

N-14 is a total different less complex engine. Every cummins mechanic I have ever talked to said the N-14 is the best engine cummins ever made.

    DXN1EL Thanks this.

I'm with '89 Pete, If it's a '60 KW you could look at an NTC or BCIV Cummins- or maybe make 550W9's day and but a B Cat in it! Yes, they are mechanical motors (not ECM'd) but they can be built to make some serious HP and torque, which is what you will need for logs. Fuel economy is going to suffer in that line of trucking, but if you drive (and spec) the truck well, you should can still come out OK.

It's all relative; will you routinely run 7-7.5 mpg, probably not. But do you have to suffer with 2-3 mpg, HELL NO! And you are right on the money in wanting to stay away from the '09 EPA motors!

    1989 Pete Thanks this.

I wouldnt buy a big cam or 3406B, id go straight for a 3406E/N-14/Detroit if i had the cash. The big cam wont last very long pushing serious HP and the B model seems to have issues after 750hp at the tires.

The E models will do it all day long and ask for more the next day.

I had to keep a stock of injectors on hand as one always seemed to fail every month and replaced a couple of heads and ecms along the way it just always seemed to have proplems when I needed it most but so did the peterbuilt that was wrapped around it
So I guess maybe I was just happy to get rid of the whole truck

Well thank you for all the suggestions and valuable information. I'll probably stick with the Cummins in the end.. either an N-14 or a later BC and stick with pre-ECM. I just know those motors better and I know an incredible Cummins mechanic that can really squeeze the HP our of those old motors. More power= better mileage as long as you can keep the foot off the floor! ;) As for the truck being a log truck, I'm going to make it a quick change for a fifth wheel so I can devirsify and eventually haul a lot of other things. I just have a good foot in the door with logging to start up. I don't run my own business yet. Thanks again!
