a simple alternative - 3406C with the bigger stronger stuff inside and no electronics to deal with. Mine is set up to run and getting 5-ish MPG pulling a step deck with a moderately heavy foot!

Ive had detroit and they do get good fuel milage. thats cool if thats your thing but get ready to spend a heap of money.. I had a b model cat that was real stout. way stouter than any 500 horse det. I will never, ever own another detriot. always kept my parking spots to oily!

Well, if you want an old mechanical engine, get a 3408-V8 Cat (I know you dont want a cat, but you will never look back if you get this engine) or a 8V71 Detroit. If you want Electronical, then get a 3406E or a C16.. A 3406A Cat would be even better in a 60 Kdub

8V71? Ok Butters!
3408 is a great engine but the 2.5mpg it will get is not for todays standards, air compressors and fan clutches for them are ALMOST obsolete.alds Thanks this. -
There seems to have been a mechanical N-14, probably that was also called a Big Cam V.Anyone that knows better please feel free to enlighten us.
The B Cat is much preferred by the people I know over the C Cat, that OHC motor had lots of issues.
I don't know how you are going to run an ECM in a 1960 tractor. It would be expensive no matter which you used. I'd stick to a mechanical engine and not just for cost. -
12v71 was a waste of iron as well, so was the 8v92, leaked oil and no power.
All you need is a wire harness and you can run any engine in any truck.
The C model was a OHV not a OHC motor and is stronger than the B, the pump, block, pistons, main bores were wider than the B, it wasent made as long.Last edited: Dec 4, 2008

Which ECM doesn't require constant voltage, even half of 12 volts as in starting sometimes can trigger a Cummins to throw a check engine or code? -
