To the best of my knowledge the thermostat is on the passenger side of the engine. Follow the upper radiator hose. This will lead you to a housing that is bolted onto the block. If you unbolt this housing the thermostat is inside the housing. This will require that you unbolt and lay aside the ac compressor. Do not remove the ac lines off of the ac compressor or you will have to get the ac system recharged. I haven't changed one out in three months though so the ac compressor might actually be the alternator.

sounds like thermostat, you can remove radiator cap with engine running to see if the water looks like it is circulating.............what kind of fan hub do you have is it releasing like it should ...........put small pice of cardboard over grill for temp. to try

there is no water circulating when I take the cap off.I also took the hose off the bottom of the surge tank and nothing comes out of it while it's running.theres no heat in the truck now either.so you guys think I should just try to replace the thermastat??I see the big box looking thing that is just above the water pump.I took the belt off and tried to turn the pump pulley but it would not move and it's not leaking water from the hole..I just dont want to buy a 300.00 water pump and dont need it at this point and time when work is just so slow.....thanks guys and let me know if I just should change the thermastat...as far as the cardboard goes I drove it down the road and the temp went up high and then it came back to normal even with it high like 270 I didnt have any heat......

Sounds to me you have a coolant leak somewhere. Obviously, if you took off the bottom hose of the surge tank and had no coolant, there is no coolant in the surge tank unless the fitting is plugged. But since your heater now all of a sudden quit working, I'd say you've lost a lot of coolant. However, since your first symptom does not fit, I'd say you have another problem. The best way to see if your thermostats are stuck open is first, make sure your cooling system is properly filled, and then run the truck to operating temperature sitting still. It will get hot.... If then you drive down the road and the operating temperature takes a dive, your thermostats are stuck open. This is something that some guys don't understand...the thermostats control the minimum operating temperature of the engine. If you have coolant flow all time through the radiator...the cooling system cannot maintain a constant minimum temperature.

Anyways, in your specific condition I would replace the thermostat. Its not a big job, depending on the truck make and model. The a/c compressor is usually mounted on the driver's side and the alternator is mounted on the passenger side on M-11 engines. The alternator is not required to come off. Drain the coolant, remove the upper radiator hose and the take the four bolts off from the t-stat housing and remove. You can easily remove the t-stat by popping it out with a straight edge screwdriver. Then using the screwdriver and hammer, make sure to remove the seal in the bottom of the housing. Using a 2" socket will be ideal to reinstall that seal, but anything you can find will work. Simply pop the t-stat into place, reinstall the housing and tube, and then refill the cooling system. As far as your heat goes, like I said, I believe you have a coolant leak. Inspect the truck for something external. If you do not see anything, make sure there is no coolant in the oil or fuel. You can also lose coolant through your air compressor and don't for the overflow on the surge tank.

And there's something we need to get straight. On most trucking applications you will not see the flow from the surge tank. The best way to make sure your water pump is working correctly, on any engine and truck model, is to take off the engine coolant vent line off at the surge tank and if you have coolant flowing out of the hose...this will make a slight mess if you're not careful, the water pump is working ok.

    Any questions, just hollar.
