I am looking into buying a 98 freighliner Classic XL that has 909,755 on a Detroit diesel series 60 12.7 lit. engine. Any ideas how long it will last going otr?? It has not had any major work done to it , so i thinking it is due for an overhaul very soon.thanks.

My '97 379 has a Detroit with 1.7 Million miles and had an in-frame at around 1 million. It's just now starting to use a little more oil so it's looks like I'll be getting around to getting it done within the next 100-200K.

pass on that truck,by the end of 2011 it will be useless in CA. An 04-06 motor can be retro-fitted with a DPF to be compliant with CARB,anything older no can do. I'll be having to replace my 02 century with an 07 year model engine truck and I'll have to put a DPF on my 05 by 2013 but one must be compliant 1-01-2012. Don't buy it!

What does in an in-frame cost on avg.?
-
probably more than that truck is worth.seen ads for as low as $5900.00 but thats like a $39.00 brake job,it always ends up much more.
-
We have until 2013 but, that could change back.... -
thought it was 3or less but one still had to comply 1-01-2012 with the others to comply 1-01-2014,then be retired by end of 2017,unless you buy 07 or newer model engine? Maybe I'll get Mexican plates and run under NAFTA rules!!

Probably is more that the truck is worth but if I pay $11000 for it and get 10 grand inframe done on it, then dump it Jan 2013. It still cheaper than spending $30-40 grand for a truck (plus interest) then having to dump it or retro fit with the exhaust (10 - 12 grand). Plus my credits sucks from being laid off for 6 months (I cant get a job because I havent driven a truck since 2000).
