This thread is for owners of Volvo D16 engines. A number of driver's are having problems with this engine. I and several other D16 owners want to gather information as to the problems you may have experienced with this engine for a possible class action lawsuit.

I have 335000 miles on my engine and am on my third turbo. The engine recently had an overhead done and is using a gallon of oil every 1000 miles. I get an ECM failure alarm when turbo boost is 45psi and pyrometer is at 600 degrees. Under light loads 10 to 20k lbs between 45 and 60mph I get a vibration. I dont know where it is coming from but it is driving me crazy.

I know, the real sad part about it is the time that they have the truck. At first I would get the truck back in 1-3 days, now it is going on 2 weeks. Volvo claims to have the problem diagnosed in 2 hours, well I dropped my truck off last Tuesday and I got my answer today.

As far as the turbo goes on the D16, the turbo itself isn't failing like a traditional turbo fails, since it's a variable geometry turbocharger, the sliding nozzle turbine can seize up to the point where the actuator can't move it anymore, so it throws a fault and the engine can run like crap, if the actuator is stuck in a certain position. I wouldn't blame it entirely on Volvo, Holset the turbo manufacturer should take some blame, if not all for this design problem. Also the D16 uses the exact same turbo as the Cummins ISX and they themselves are feeling this problem.

Actually holset is the builds the turbo the the housing and design are entirely volvo's. Thats why the isx engine dosent have the same problem.

Holset should take none of the blame. Cummins owns Holset....try looking it up some time. Holset builds the turbo to Volvo's specs....it isn't their fault.

I work here at a local Volvo and these new Volvo engines including the D16 are all having turbo, injector, injector sleeves, heads, and piston problems. The minor stuff is egr valves, breaking exhaust bolts, breaking intake bolts, and multiple oil leaks including the cam position sensor, injector harness, valve cover, and oil filter housing.

I may be bias because I work at Volvo......but I mostly work on Cummins here and I hardly see any major problems with Cummins engines.
