I noticed after driving my '88 Pete with the Big Cam IV in it, and parking it for awhile. When I come back I notice oil has dripped out of the oil tube. Is this normal for a 915k mile motor?
    thanks,

You're gonna get a little oil from there from time to time...especially with the engine's age. Just as long as there's not a lot of smoke coming out of it....or too much oil, then there's nothing to worry about.

NO its not normal but with an engine that old no harm done UNLESS you have to much in the pan or the oil is milkey that means you have water in the oil NOT A GOOD THING if the oil is clean just run it till you can afford to do an in frame GOOD LUCK . ----SOUTHERN PRIDE

No milky looking oil, no smoke, just a little pool of oil where its been setting in the shed...Bout the size of one of my wifes "mini-pancakes" she makes for breakfast!(lol)

I need to correct something, I thought I had a Big Cam IV, but "Vegetto05" identified it by the engine numbers I supplied him as an early "N14" engine!(Shows what I know about these Cummins, which isnt very much!)

If you're referring to the 377 Pete in your album, that is an '88 BC IV, not a N14. The BC IV has three "sub" versions--the BC IV, the New BC IV, and the '88 BC IV--and yours is definitely a BC IV. The N14 however started off as the '91 N14 "COMMAND" and had two versions--the mechanical STC (step timing control) and the electronic Celect. N14s had a high flow cooling circuit like previous Big Cam I, II, and IIIs, were air-to-air (charge-air) cooled, and incorporated numerous changes/improvements to the previous Big Cam blocks which were only aftercooled. The BC IV's had a low-flow cooling circuit for "optimized" aftercooling and were vastly different from previous Big Cam engines.

Unfortunately, Cummins seems to refer to most 855s now as N14s. I've run into it personally with my '88 BC IV engines. Quickserve too showed my engines to be N14s--that they certainly were not!

Don't worry about the oil dripping from the breather tube. I got rid of my last '88 BC IV last year. It was a '90 FLD120 with over 1 mil (no overhaul) and had a few minor issues much like yours. It's the truck in my avatar. FWIW, I did replace thermostats about ever two to three years. They have a habit of developing minor cracks which will bypass coolant and cause overheating issues. ...not good in the south Texas, humid, summer heat!
