3406b turn up

    I don't think I went the wrong way, where the pump was pinned I turned it back the opposite way that it normaly turns(the pump, not motor), which would make it inject fuel sooner. Which is advanced.

    I don't know what the ID number on the motor is, the tag is missing in action, Don't know how I would ID the motor. Anybody got any Ideas??

    That is retarded. You must turn it (the pump) the same way it's normally turning. If you turn the engine, then it's the opposite

    OK, It worked!!!!
    I turned it the right way this time, turned pump about 1/16th counter clockwise this time(about where les has his). Sound better.

    Called peterbilt gave them vin and they gave me the ESN the truck was built with. they said to look on the block for the # stamped in it. Sure enough there it was on the passenger side!!! It is the original motor. It's a 3ZJ.

    The pump camshaft can't turn after you pin it.. :biggrin_25512:
    When you roll the engine back with the pin in the pump it advances the fuel pump, or when the fuel is injected..
    Easy to get confused depending on the context, yes.. :biggrin_2552:

    '92 was the breakover year for the 3406b to the 3406c..
    I have one also, and Cat gets them wrong half the time, you need to confirm what you actually have when ordering parts according to engine arrangement.. :biggrin_2552:

    That can be a good engine to build a racehorse if you have the right combination of parts.. :biggrin_25524:

    The engine serial number is stamped on the right side below number 5.. Takes a wirewheel to find it sometimes.. :biggrin_2554:

    It's a 3406B acourding to peterbilt. It only has two wires going to the pump(fuel shutoff solonoid) so I'm sure it's a B. The C's have partly electronic pumps don't they?????

    You're talking about the PEEC engines..
    Some are b models, some are c models, but not all the c's were..

    What I was told [by a fellow who knows his ####] is Cat switched formats of how they kept the records about the time these engines were made.. Certain engine AR's were screwed during the switch..

    Not saying for sure that yours is, but its possible being a '92 3zj.. :biggrin_2552:

    What number is cast on the side of your fuel pump??
    Something like 7e8555.. :biggrin_2554:

    Also was wondering if you "loaded her down" yet, to see how your adjustments worked out.. :biggrin_25519:

    Several questions. How long have you had it?
    has the power declined?
    Does it have a mechanical problem that would cause low power? Restricted nozzles, fuel pressure, turbo boost problem or leak, air core leaking? If so those need to be addressed first. When was the last rack ran? These engines were set from the factory to put out the right amount of power, 'TURNING THE SCREWS' to it may make it run like a raped ape for a minute, but after a few minutes, days, etc. your pistons may start melting, your head gasket may blow, etc.
    You need to find a good CAT house and have it inspected, Dyno test would show Horse Power and Fuel rate, then you would know if it is doing what it should. Is the fuel system good? Bad air fuel ratio and busted diaphrams can cause problems.

    If you are ever in the Atlanta area - there is a CAT house off of Moreland Ave that has a tech there that used to do warranty work on those mechanical engines.

    big k wooper, there's nothing wrong with the motor, runs just fine. I just like to tinker with my stuff. That way I learn how to work on it, and how to fix it when it does break.:biggrin_25522: Besides, my pyro is way below 1250 pre turbo, so I have room for more fuel.:biggrin_25525:

    Does anybody know where to get a used 18spd or 15spd trans pretty reasonable?????? Have a 15 deep reduction in her right now, don't like the fact that you can't split the last 5 gears with the deep reduction:biggrin_25512:

    I had an 03 kitty single turbo that would pull 42psi all the way to 2200, drove that way for 2.5 yrs. After I quit I told the boss to set the truck back to "specs" and he didnt do it well bout a month later at the shop with a disenagrated turbo and other problems.

    Not that I'm great but but I also had a hopped up 06 kitty no problems again boss man sold truck 2 wks later new owner and a load of fish on the side of the road drive shaft out.


    I say put the fuel to it and see how it goes a buddy of mine has a 86 pete with a cat and raw fuel comes out the stacks when he stands on it. so yeah its real hot. Oh and about 5 yrs never turned a bolt on it for major internal repairs
