have caution if you have a:biggrin_2553: truck 94 to 2003 carb it will requier that you have a chip of low Nox,in your truck plus one sticker, so that you can regester into california also the discription information of your motor is clear enough to read if not you pay the consicuence of getting a ticket but no less of :biggrin_2555:300 dollars for the first time that chip is free (i think)in every dealer or they charge you 175 dollars for fix before you come to golden state, find out in your state:biggrin_2556:

That chip (or low-NOx ECM profile) will also destroy your fuel mileage. Expect to lose 1-2 mpg. Of course, burning more diesel = cleaner air by California's logic.

My advice: Simply avoid California. They can sit there and enjoy their "clean" air and pay astronomical prices on everything.

If your engine was built after 1/1/99 you have low NOX settings from factory and no further update is availible. the big thing is the sticker on the engine. Ca cant read your ecm program . low NOX settings can programmed into engines built before 1/1/99 leading to decreased mpg that Txviking referred to

I've also heard rumors that low NOx programs increase soot emissions. I don't know if that's true, although it wouldn't surprise me that tuning to minimize one pollutant increases another.

If it is true, however, I wonder if this emissions requirement (low NOx) could cause you to fail an emissions test (opacity)? That would be pretty ironic.

Soot emissions = Need for DPF (diesel particulate filter)

If you had a rebuild your ECM was re-flashed too...
The decals are usually on the valve cover if you are buying a used truck.....

That NOx decal should be the least of your worries.....
As of Jan 1, 2010..... you won't be able to haul from ports or military installations with a pre-2004 rig.....

Pre-CARB rigs must have a DPF retrofit ie...2004 with a DPF....

The new Overdrive magazine came in the mail today and there was an article about the new Cali. regs. Here ya go:

Pre 1994 engines are not allowed at all.
1994-2003 engines must be retrofitted with CARB approved Level 3 particulate filters

This is effective for all ports on 1 January 2010.

    What's coming down the line:

1 January 2013- 2007 or later tech. mandated

1 January 2021- 2010 or later tech. mandated

They are also apparently trying to ban Owner-Operators from hauling in/out of ports, but so far have not been able to skirt the Federal Interstate Commerce rules.

The article did not mention military bases so I don't have any information on that.

My personal opinion: CA can fall into the Pacific ocean. After all rust free pre 1975 automobiles and pre 2003 trucks have been removed.
