    Couple of weeks ago I turned on my truck and this code came up mid128 sid17 fmi7. When I hit more information on the truck computer it just says fuel shutoff valve mechanical damage.

    Now, my truck is set to shutdown after 10minutes idle. Ever since this code came up the truck hasn't been shutting down after 10minutes idle or at all. Another problem is when I turn it off and remove the key from the ignition it tends to run for about 30 seconds and finally shutdowns.

    I could use more information on the problem so I'm hoping one of you has had a similar issue. I basically want to avoid having the dealer take it in if it is something I can take care of myself.

    The valve probably is damaged, that is why it takes time for the truck to shut down when you shut it off. What year and how many miles on it?

    The shutdown valve is the little square block with a single wire going to it on the side of the fuel manifold, above the fuel filter. It is basicially an electro-magnet solenoid that holds open a valve. When you turn off the key, the ECM kills the power to the solenoid. There is a round disc shaped something like a salad bowl inside that acts like a spring to force the valve closed. The valve it self is another solid round disc about the size of dollar coin, 3/8" thick. What usually happens is over time and many many cycles the valve starts to wear and gets stuck. You can try this fix your self. It is a 50/50 thing. You can remove the wire, and unscrew the 4 screws that hold the shutoff valve to the fuel manifold. You have to be careful. There is actually a spacer plate in between the solenoid, (square block) and the fuel manifold. This spacer plate is where the spring and valve are. Try to remove the whole block and spacer with out anything falling out. Mark which way is the top. Lay the parts out as they were originally. Make sure that there isn't any dirt or scale built up inside. You will see the spacer plate, you will see the marks on it from where the valve has be riding. Clean the parts and reassemble the spacer plate with the valve upside-down. It won't matter if it is upside-down, the valve is round and up/down doesn't matter. Just make sure it still faces the same direction with the spring. Because you have reassembled it upside-down the valve and spacer will be riding on a fresh, unworn surface. Plus, since you have cleaned it, you have a good chance it will be fine. The only bad thing is the old worn orings. You won't know if they will leak until you reassemble it. If they leak, you will need new ones obviously. Give that a try! Good luck!

    Thanks A LOT Heavyd. I located the valve, took a look, and replaced it. Only cost me 100 bucks out of pocket. Your post was a big help, thanks again :)

    Cool, honestly, I am happier that you replaced it all together.

    Thanks a lot Heavyd. I know this is an old post, but still, even today your solution fixed the problem. Everything you wrote is to the best of description. Even though i ended up putting the new part in, i've still cleaned and reasembled the old one...

    Heavyd Thanks this.

    Glad to help out! Sometimes too I will find the center of that disc has a small rubber seal that is heavily grooved or has a small piece missing and that will cause the problem. Replacement is always better!

    Heavyd I have a 2013 Cummins isx15 engine. It will crank and crank and crank and crank but won't start. What could it be? What is it preventing or causing it to not turn over? Could you help out?

    The fuel pump primer does not have electric power. Either the fuse is burned or there is a short somewhere. By pass the fuse or hot wore the fuse to get power to it..

    @Heavyd
    8.5yrs after the original post and your response is still helpful. I knew something was wrong when the engine kept running for 15-20 seconds after the ignition was shut off but I wasn't getting a code until last night. Grabbed the phone and did a quick search for my 257 code and was led here.
    I replaced everything except the spacer and the actual valve (MHC didn't have them) which I cleaned with brake cleaner. Being meticulous and anal about the repair only took 25min and $130.
    Thank you for consistently (and considerately) posting good information.

    Goodysnap and Heavyd Thank this.
