Just got a new truck last week with a 550 ISX. New to Cummins, always had Cat engines. So far I love it, pulls real well but would like to know what can be done to ECM to get even more. Of course warranty is an issue but can it be taken to 600? Truck is an 09 Peterbilt, 18 speed, 56 rears. Pull coal in the mountains, need the power.

The 550 is a different beast than the 600. When you look at the 600 you can see that Cummins knew the 500 block couldn't take the 2050 ft lbs they wanted out of the 600.

I am rather confused about your statement BrianHurtz. As far as I understand the X1 (400 hp) all the way up to the X3 (600 hp) uses the same block.

Scarecrow454, any Authorized Cummins distributorship can take your engine which is classified as as X3 (highest horsepower) from a 550 to a 600 hp with just a new calibration download. Since the engine is already a 550 you won't notice any difference between the two unless you run up into the 1800 rpm range alot. The 550 and 600 has the same horsepower line through the rpm range until you hit 1700 - 1900 rpm. What you need to do is get the higher torque rating. You transmission is going to be the limiting factor on that one. They will only warrenty it up to a certain amount.

His 18spd isn't going to be an issue (700hp and 2250tq) even a 13spd is rated for 700/2050.

If he wants to retain his warrenty it is.

Those are Eaton's ratings. Unless someone ordered a truck with an 18spd to haul coal in KY with the 1250ftlb clutch it's not going to be a warranty issue. If it's the RTLO-20918B or the RTLO-22918B the transmission is not going to be the reason it can't be uprated. The RTLO-18918B is limited to 550/1850

Hey, surely thank you all for the info! I think my transmission is the 22918B. I would sure like to take it to 600, I do need to run the rpm's up on occasion but definately interested in higher torque settings. Thanks again!
