Someone please explain to me, or point me to, the proper function of a 3 stage turbo brake on a non-EGR MBE 4000? Mine is petering out in the 3rd stage after a few seconds, sounds like the turbo just quits trying and spools down. I've had Clarke Power in Georgetown, KY look at it several times (they replaced the turbo last year) and say they can't figure it out. Of course if it is the turbo, warranty is up now, how convenient! But the turbo spools fine when pulling, just not during the braking sequence. I really think it is the exhaust flap though, I can't hear it anymore like I used to when it runs. Anyone know of a GOOD shop in the midwest or east coast that has experience working on those?

You say turbo brake, then you say flap. Which one is it?
Turbo brake doesnt have a flap, exhaust brake does.
An excellent shop in Iowa is Interstate Detroit in Altoona. Exit 143 on I80. If you can make it there, speak to Jack Frost, he is excellent on MBE motors.

MBE are exhaust brake not turbo brake. Your turbo has absolutely nothing to do with the operation of your exhaust brake it just bolts to the back of it thats it.

My old one had the turbo brake.
There are two different engine brakes on the MBE motors over here. Exhaust brake and turbo brake.
Exhaust brake is a flap, turbo brake is a cone looking affair that puts pressure on the turbine wheel (as far as I could tell anyways).

I'm going right through Altoona the first of next week, I'll swing through there and see if they have time to take a look at it. I'm guessing I have the turbo brake, it does look like a cone... but it has that flap thing in there too. But yeah, I'll see if Jack Frost can take a look at it... Does Frosty the Snowman work there too?? HaHa couldn't resist!

He works afternoon and evening shift. So 4-5pm should see him there, but maybe call first. tell him Martin with the Western Star sent you his way. He drinks Busch Light BTW, which goes over very well when the time comes to work out the bill!

Really? an MBE4000? I've only ever seen exhaust brakes on them here.

Turbo brake was an expensive option, but worked a LOT better than the exhaust brake flapper thing. Cant remember how much it was when I got the last truck, but was a considerable amount.

(you'll need 3 jumpers to do this)
    How does this setting perform?
