I just bought a 2010 367 Pete, and the black paint on the frame etc is peeling. There is obviously no primer on the brake pots, axle ends, drive shaft etc. I have 28000 kms on it and bought it at the end of June 09. The paint on my 01 Western Star didnt need attention for at least 4 yrs, even with our Canadian roads.Anyone with similar problems. Also only 4 mos warranty on the frame paint as the truck is registered as a logger. Thanks.

The frame paint on my 02 and 07 Pete both did the same thing.Looked like very poor prep prior to paint

I would say a poor prep job also. The de-icer that many of the states have been useing is so harsh it has taken pretty much all the original paint off the rear frame of my '06 Pete. I clean the frame up and repaint it every spring. After the economy gets better and I have a few extra bucks I want to sandblast it bare and go with a coating...not sure which yet.

I agree that the paint should last longer, but you also have to take into consideration the enviroment the paint is trying to survive in. I mean the rear frames of these trucks really get abused with the water, salt, sand, mud, stone, and other road debris that it sees in a day. Then throw in the fact that the frame flexs and fastners move ever so slightly and you can see why the paint flakes off. Not that I'm making excuses for the lack of prep and finish work that the rear frames require, but its just a fact of life.

I agree the frame etc takes a beating, but in my case I can peel the paint off in big sheets the size of credit cards. After you peel the paint off, the steel underneath is perfectly clean and shiny, not a hint of primer at all.The frame itself is not bad, but the axle ends, brakepots cam tubes etc are brutal.Just wondering what will be left in the spring after the salt and stuff have a chance to do their work. Chrome Shop Mafia said they come across this before on other Paccar products.

I think it's a Paccar thing because the paint on my KW frame was peeling in a year. I sold a '98 Dorsey steel framed flatbed to a friend about 3 years ago and that frame has never been painted and still looks surprisingly good for being 11yrs old. So it can be done Paccar must not do any prep work, I always order the frames painted black just for this reason. They should offer powder coating as an option.

that is sad ain't it. you would think paint should last longer. i know winter chemicals have changed over the years, but so have paint formulations. i own a 2000 transcaft trailer. some call these years rustcraft. i don't know how paccar paints but transcraft tried a single stage paint process, primer, topcoat,? , all in one step. didn't work. that's why you see some built between 97/98 and 2000/2001 that look like they have cancer, regardless of latitude.i sand blasted the entire trailer and repainted and it has done well for 3 years and still looks nice, except for the cancer spots. i wonder if they didn't try something along those lines? a friend of mine recommended tractor/implement paint. i am no painter. said , with hardner it will shine, goes on in a nice thick coat , pretty forgiving.

i know for sure about the rustcraft,i just hand sanded a 99' inside and out. i'm using rubberized undercoating in the can for primer. after i get it built up,i'm putting a good coat of rustoleum spray on it to keep cost low. if you want to get a good job done for a reasonable price,we got it going on in the tarheel.
