Hello, I need to replace the starter on my 3406E in a Freightliner FLD120.
    Any tips?
I know this thing weighs 50 LBS, so a jack will be in order.
    thanks for the help....

when u take the cables and wires of the starter, zip tie the wires that come off each post together. that way u don't get them mixed up. the back bolt is a pain to get too. just have to use alot of extensions. u should be able to replace it without a jack.

Look into a Bosch starters, they are lightweight and have a good warranty, 3 or 5 yrs? They are alittle more expensive, but should be well worth the money.

Make sure you unhook your batteries so you don't fry anything! You'll need a 12 point 9/16" or 5/8", for the one in back you may need to use a 3/8" ratchet and small socket. When you get it loose it should hang on the nose cone but be careful!

Them bolts may be 1/2", its been a while and I can't remember...lol

What works good sometimes is to get a stud or a bolt that is long enough that you can cut the head off and it will stick out far enough that you can get your fingers on it to turn it out once the starter is on. That way you can just slip the starter over the stud/bolt and it will hold it up there while you start the other two bolts.
