    I have found a 2000 Pete 379 I am interested in it has a 3406E with 980K miles.

Where can I get an oil analysis done in the Portland area or in WA?

If the oil analysis, dyno and inspection checks out should I get this truck? (I can get it for a good price)

    thanks,
    Andrew

You can go to your local CAT dealer and buy a sample kit. Just pull a sample and send it in. Also there is a Speedco Truck Lube just south of Portland at exit 278 in Aurora, OR. They can take a sample by drawing the oil up through the oil fill or dipstick tubes. For either one you need to know what oil (Manufacturer and weight) is in it and how many miles on the truck and oil change.

    thanks guys for the info.

So if you guys where in my shoes and everything checks out would you buy the truck with the miles it has?

also is there anyone near Ridgefield WA that would be able to look at the truck for me?

I would buy it if the price was right (less than 10k), and everything checks out with a mechanic.
Also has it had an inframe yet? with those miles it is due, if it did not have one early.
Remember, truck prices are at an all time low. You can get a 2005 379 for under 40k with half those miles with a little looking, and you do not even need to look hard.

not sure about the inframe I will hopefully know tomorrow (the truck was repoed) so they are contacting the old owner to find out. Hopefully it was and he has paperwork.

This truck/trailer is a car hauler setup so its hard to find one in the price range I am looking at.

I bought my truck 3 mounths ago Paid $16000.00 for it.Has 833000 miles no motor work done to it.Runs strong no mechanical issues.I change my own oil and fluids, filters they are good engines.Buy it from O/O if you can.

the motor has not been rebuilt but I can get the truck and trailer for a good price.

I need to be able to make 15 trips so I have enough money for a rebuild
    (1000-1500 miles per trip)

should I be able to make those trips before the motor needs to be rebuilt?

What about the rest of the truck (brakes , front end , tires , fifth wheel , wiring , etc) ? The engine can often be the least of concern for breakdowns . Downtime is expensive and damages your reputation for reliability .
There was a truck parked at a tank wash for sale near here last year for $15,000 . It was sold and 6 months later it was on the bulletin board again with $6,000 worth of repairs done and an asking price of $18,000 .

I am not sure yet about the rest of the truck hopefully it will get inspected tomorrow or Wednesday. I am all about keeping my equipment clean and well maintained. My major concern is the motor and then brakes, front end and then tires and the rest of the little stuff isn't a big deal if it needs to be fixed.

I just need the motor to last for about 15 trips or so I make enough money to get it replaced and don't break down on the side of the road and be sol... which it sounds like it should last that long.

assuming the brakes, tires, front end is in good shape I will replace the motor first and then replace all the other stuff after that. When I buy something I like starting fresh so I dont have to worry as much about everything.
