Hey guys I am looking at a truck to use on the farm for hopper bottom work hauling grain. I have found a 2003 T800 with 10 spd 3.90 rears 370 hp Cummins ISM with 750,000 on the motor. These where fleet trucks but they wouldnt release the maintenance records with them. They were used to pull reefers and van trailers. My question is How long will the ISM go before needing some work? With no records i have no idea if the motor has been touched or not so i am just going to assume that it has had no work done to it. I can buy this truck for about $17500 which i feel is a good buy but I am just a little leery of the small block engine. Any info is greatly appreciated.
Cummins ISM?

I'd pass at that mileage, and price...................
-
Price isn't bad...mileage, no. I don't think those motors were known for longevity.
For a short while I drove a 99 t800 with that same motor...that thing was absolutely GUTLESS. -
Get abigger engine with less mileage, seems like those were too small and they just worked too hard to do the same job. You can get a used Schneider w/350,000 or a few more https://www.sfitruck.com/used.aspx Buy a good truck or find a day cab which will be cheaper of course. http://www.trucker.com/Trucks.aspx?...Tractor&Make=Freightliner&SubCategory=Day_Cab At 400,000 the warranty runs out and then thing go wrong. We sold a about 380,000

What about an ISX with similar mileage? I am mainly going to be hauling grain from the field to our bins and bins to elevator. The longest trip being about 25 miles on way and most trips under 5 miles one way. I will only be putting about 6- 10,000 miles on a year at most.
-
Then if you're not going to be driving it much...go for it.
-
yeah we don't put many miles on them in a year. Just gotta have something at harvest time and to haul to the elevator in the winter. Not gonna be used every day but when we need one we really need one. harvest doesn't wait for anyone. The old single axle chevy grain trucks just arne't big enough anymore to do the job in a timely manner. Need something that can pull a trailer that will hold 900 bushel instead of 300 bushels like the chevy's.

Offer them $13500 and then walk away. If they won't release service info I would suspect they are hiding something. That engine could last 10 more years or snap the crank in two tomorrow. Generally trucks only have about a 7 to 10 year life span without major work. This truck is beginning the end of its life. There are a ton of used trucks out there right now. With the economy still recovering there are also a ton of good deals too. Be patient!
Big Duker Thanks this. -
We have a KW T 800 with a cummins ISM.It has 852,000 on the engine. Good truck we haven't had any major problems with the ISM. Only negative is low horse power. If you need stronger pulling truck you might look into the ISX.

Just curious.
