Hi everyone. I own a 2007 FL Century w/ a 13 speed, 500hp Detroit Series 60. I am looking to do my own rebuild and it will be my first one. I realize how much work is involved here but i am quickly approaching 1 million miles on the truck, i am getting bad mpg, and I am leaking oil from just about every seal under the hood. I was priced at 5k to get these leaks fixed alone which include cam seals, oil out the exhaust mani, flywheel to block, exhaust manifolds, egr cooler at the weld, rear gear case leaking at the block.

I am in a bit of a predicament b/c this last year has just been terrible as far as profit is concerned. This truck has been in the shop so much this last year that basically everything EXCEPT the motor is new on this thing. As is now, I am losing about 1.5 gals of oil a day and I just cannot see running this truck much farther without taking action. Problem here of course is cost. 5k to fix these seals and still not really have a rebuild seems like a waste and I cannot afford nor, do I have a means to get the 12-15k being asked by shops to do a basic engine rebuild.

So I have become determined to gather a few knowledgeable friends together and just do the work myself and get this truck rolling again. I guess what i am looking for here is some advice and some good resources on what I need to be checking, replacing, and looking for while tearing into this thing and also where I may find the best prices for parts. Money is a bit of an issue so i would def like to go the most inexpensive way on this. I dont want to do more than necessary but also, if theres something I should be replacing while inside to avoid a near future problem and even more costs, then obviously, I would like to do that to avoid damage or costs later. Please let me know your suggestions! thanks

    -J

Also, I do realize that in many cases, injectors and turbos are included in pricing etc for a rebuild. I will be checking these too but I don't believe these are needing to be replaced at this time.

If you are getting oil out the exhaust, the turbo definitely needs replacing, and that is where most of your oil consumption is.

be carefull, oil may burn inside engine and engine may selfaccelerate and may easily be destroyed with self accelerating burnibg oil as fuel.

If you plan to do your own rebuild the very first thing you need to buy is the service manual for your engine. They are pricey, but it will be the most valuable tool you'll have!

Heres my advice , Overhaul your motor on the side! First buy a used ready to run motor, Drop it in and Drive! Then when your at home work on the other motor, it takes a long time the first time you do something to get it right. You must double check everything> EVERYTHING !! Hire someone thats done it before for advise. Or tip the Tech at local Shop where you do business. Make a friend
