I recently purchased a 98 Pete. My pyrometer never moves off of 75 degrees F. Looking for troubleshooting tips. Is the sending unit or sensor bad, bad guage, what can I do to troubleshoot it or repair it. Definitely don't want to burn anything up.

Thanks for your help from a newbie to the forum.

    What is this pyrometer measuring?
Pyrometer is generic name for a type of temp. reading.
    Transmission? Differential(s)? Turbocharger?

    Should be exhaust temp.

WHen I bought my Pete, the pyro didn't work...put a new probe in and away it went. But if I remember right, it wasn't as cheap as you'd think.

Difficult to point in the right direction w/o playing with it, but.....
    1. need the test the probe, the line and the gauge
(need resistance values from the mfg)
    2. is value of the probe sufficiant to cover such high temp
    3. possition of the probe (might be in the "line-of-fire"
Have a good shop look at it, should not cost an arm to diagnose.

Thanks to all of you for your help. Which side of the turbo is the sensor/sending unit for the pyrometer?

Years ago most were before the turbo appox 1200 degs max, some were after the turbo 5" out on the pipe at about 1000 degs max all controlled by how much fuel it was getting and your foot.

Should be a few inches after the turbo in the exhaust pipe. Buy a new probe, hook it up but don't install it then hold a cigarette lighter over the probe to see if it moves the gauge or not. If that works then fine, if that's not the problem you'll be able to return that part.

Mine was doing the same thing. The wire where the probe is connected had a short at the connection. the sheathing looked good but when I started messing with it I found the short. The wire to the probe is very thin and had pulled loose from the connector but sheathing was good.
