Changing Stacks on a 60s detroit

01 western star, 60 detroit, 13 speed E/F. Thinking of swapping stacks with a bud of mine.

His are 7 or 8 inch fat stacks mine are stock.

If I change the exhaust does the intake need to be modified as well, or the computer remapped to acount for the increased exhaust flow?

    Thanks,

As an after thought it might not hurt to put a pyrometer on your exhaust. With the reduced back pressure your turbo may spin a bit faster. Granted this means better power, yet I would be more concerned about too much heat at the turbo.

A diesel gets its power from being able to breathe. Larger exhaust the turbo wont have to fight the back pressure. Dual turbos help the engine gobble more air for combustion. These are the simple things for more power.

the mufflers would go, they are installed on the uprights, the fat stacks appear to be pretty much straight pipes, there is an exhaust temp gauge on the dash.

Your not gonna hurt or need to change anything if your putting straight pipes on, keeping the mufflers or not. Your also not gonna overspeed your turbo because of less back pressure either and your not gonna need a pyro if you don't plan on building any power with this if you don't already have one, still a good gauge to have though.

I know this thread is old, but wondering if ya did the swap?? If ya did what does the Detroit sound like with straight pipes??? Don't know that I've ever heard 60 series detroit with straights...just wondering.

Not sure if you still have a waste gate turbo on it, but going to a non waste gate would be a great compliment to having freer exhaust with those stacks. A great turbo to consider is the Borg Warner S400SX4-75 with is the top line version of the 171702. Have located several of them and the average price is around $825. I am putting one of these on the Detroit 60 that is being put in a glider truck I ordered. Unlike the large stacks, I am going with Walker Megaflow mufflers to free up the exhaust.

All turbos have a wastegate. It's how it controls boost level. Some are just internal.

and when the external wastegate goes out or gets a hole rubbed in it by a loose heat shield, block it off. there is the argument that one can ruin a turbo by doing so.Counter that remark by asking just how did turbos survive back in the day when wastegates weren't on a turbo? yeah it does help a bit in spooling up and pulling and does not run hotter.that is my personal experience.
