I'm looking at buying an '08 Pete with a 550 Cat in it. Of coarse, it comes with the lovely DPF and all. I've stuck with pre '03 power up til now, so have no direct experience and have heard only the general negative stories. What's the real word on these motors? Can they be made into something and be made fuel efficient, powerful and reliable?! Thanks for all your replies in advance.
'08 Pete c/w 550 cat. Mr. Haney or anyone?!

I have a customer with 4 ...they were in the shop a fair amount....but he was hesitant to do anything to them because they had warranty ....well after looking at the records one had been in the shop over 26 weeks in a Lil over a year. ....so he said what good is the warranty if you can't run the truck .....so we converted 1 truck to 6nz style by changing a lot of parts and 1 truck we did with Pdi ecm....then ran them a few months before doing anything to the other two.... The other two got Pdi ecms......all run well know but the Pdi ecm is expensive..... But way less than what we spent converting to 6nz style ecm and wiring and injectors.... The trucks are all Pete's and will occasionally trigger a regen code or high ash content fault.....but run fine with nothing except the routine maintenance that comes with owning a truck. Robby

Thanks Robs. Some of the stories you hear about downtime are amazing. Collectively, they scream "class action" listing everyone including the EPA but individually they scream bankruptcy for many. It's too bad. Like you mentioned, there has to be a solution to these motors since there are so many on the road still. What kind of dollars are we talking for the pdi solution? Does it delete any hard parts - ie egr valve or DPF?

The easiest thing to do with a SDP engine serial number is the PDI Stage 1 tune to rid oneself of the Regen issues. I have a number of customers running these engines that have done this and all of them are extremely happy with the results. Basically you're reverting back to an earilier C15 Acert engine. The Petes will occasionally bring on the Regen light after the tune, but this will not effect the engine in anyway. The light is actually being brought on by the dashboards electronic control module.
I'll send you a PM with the particulars about doing this tuneStuskw Thanks this. -
Since your from Bc there's also a company right there in Bc that does the same ECM as pdi with a stage 1 tune (j ball electronics - google and you'll find him), I believe they also sell a delete canister so you won't have to knock the guts out of your factory delete canister if you one day want to put it back to stock because they are quite exspensive, if he doesn't have one for the cat yet pm me and I can hook you up - cheers
