My son built this 379 in 2005/2006.
It came with the rears already installed. IIRC he paid $65K for it... bought it from a guy who gave up on building it...
He bought a 2000 3406E 600 CAT from the CAT dealer in Minnesota...it was a factory test mule and had been in a Freightliner Classic. Had about 275K on the clock. He had to rewire the cab to accept a 40 pin ECM.
He also installed a new 2050-rated 18 speed (new) and the heaviest driveline available.
I believe he had $106,000 in it road ready..

He did a good job of putting the truck together... had some help but mostly did it on his own. After my big wreck in '09 we teamed together for the balance of the midwest veggie harvest with this truck. It was a joy to drive... those 90K gross loads really didn't feel that big with the 600 under the hood.
He sold the truck last summer to a young guy chasing that big money high/wide/heavy dream... my son built it for hauling wind towers but that deal went south after the '08 elections. Now he has a lowly '97 377 with a 12.7 Detroit... but it does good on fuel and it runs east every week without any major problems.
Here's a shot of me at a cranberry receiving station in Warrens, WI taken around 10/09... they unload you in about 30 seconds with several thousand gallons of water... pretty cool. The trailer, IIRC, is a 38' 1956 model.

"Gliders are released without the 12% FET assessment, as 2 of the 3 major components a transmission, engine, or rear axle must be missing, and assumed customer supplied. FET may or may not be due upon completion. Ruling is 91-27 and can be found under www.irs.gov, see your tax consultant or IRS agent for clarifications. "DONOR" vehicle is required.
75% Safe Harbor Rule - customers completed Glider Kit (purchase price, labor, parts) must be 75% or less of the cost of a new vehicle (fare market price). Potential 12% savings right off the top - USA only."
Based on the above legal talk, how is it possible to buy a freshly overhauled motor, tranny, and rears to put in your glider and still avoid the FET tax (based on the donor rule)? I like the idea, just don't fully understand it. -
