Detroit 60 crank seal.
Do I need a special tool to replace a crank seal on a series 60 Detroit? Can I reuse the flywheel bolts? I'm also looking for the torque specs on the flywheel bolts, I googled it and found two different settings, can anybody set me straight with the right figures. Much appreciated.

Yes you need a special tool to install the crank seal. http://www.apexinds.com/tools/M30100-B.html
As far as the flywheel bolts we always reuse ours and I have no idea what the torque is supposed to be but it was a discussion on here recently. You might can search and find it.

I searched but did not find the right specs. I found two contradicting torque specs. Both quote 55ft/lbs, the one says +60 degrees, the other +120, should I halve it and pull it 90 degrees? I managed to find the installation tool. I still have to find the original seal, I'm not fond of the cheap specimens. Pulling a gearbox for a small differance in seal prices makes no sense. Thanks Smellfunny.

Are you buying the seal in South Africa or can you buy in the states and have it shipped to you? If you have paypal and want one I can send you one for what ever the seal costs plus shipping etc... I have never shipped outside of the USA so I am not sure of costs etc.. But I do have one on the shelf.

Thanks for the offer, I should be able to get one from our Freightliner dealership. Detroit is a popular engine over here so it won't be too hard to get the original seal. Thanks once again.
