Ok, so I have a '95 357 pete with a detroit 60 DDEC3 that has hole in block syndrome.... too bad, she is built like a logging truck with 3:90 404 rears and 4 way lockers, a nice 13 speed double o and double rail frame front to back. We run ice roads in places that other ice road truckers fear to tread (and yes, we are on the Ïce Road Truckers show too). She has been a driver favorite for 4 seasons now, and is a little ugly looking to justify buying a new engine for her. BUT, just the other day one of our other drivers put the final nail in the coffin of another of our ice road warriors with a 10 speed ranger and a 3406.... and it is a hell of a good engine in her, I have been warming her over for a few years now and she runs like a raped ape. Anyone know how much would be involved in swapping the 3406 into the Pete? I know I need different mounts, but how many changes do I have to do to the trans to keep the 13 in the pete?

The first question(s) people will probably ask is. What are you taking it out of and what model 3406 is it?

REpower it with another Series 60, and have it tuned by an after market tuner and you will have a raped ape on your hands. Why did it punch a hole in the block? How many miles on the old motor?

It's coming out of a '93 Freightshaker. And to get a replacement engine of the caliber of the 3406 I would have to spend $10000 plus. I have both, I have a shop and really, I would just like to be able to say I done it. So, does anybody know about how much of a conversion this is? the elctrical part I can handle without sweating, I am more interested in how many of the major parts I would be able to keep. Or, on the other hand, does anyone have a detroit 60 in good shape that they would be willing to trade for a nearly 600 hp cat 3406? I need at least 550 hp. And hey, at least the shipping would be taken care of ;)

But I would really rather keep the engine and do the swap. Anyone done something like this before?

you might have to change oil pans depending on if its front or rear sump, you will need the flywheel and bellhousing from the CAT engine clucth should be the same 10 spline double disc unit. you will have to make sure accessories clear compartment with hood closed.

should be rather easy to do going from computerized to mechanical.. depending on what year 357 you would have to see what guages will work as some of them might be lectrically fed signal from computer.

YOu will also need to change the drive by wire foot pedal for throttle and change it to a mechanical type old school pedal with linkage.

Well, thanks, that's what I was mostly asking about. And most of the guages on this old beast are mechanical so it shouldn't be too bad. Oh, I also see that you are also into turning up your 3406b, got any favorite mods that have worked in the real world for you? I have done the manual tuning of the pump to the best of my ability, anyone know of an expert to send it to to go even further with timing and such? Or know of a charge air cooler that would fit in my 357 and get better performance than the original? I like hotrodding my trucks, it's fun and the drivers really love the extra power. I find they take better care of a truck that they are in love with too ;)

Hello. Can anyone tell me what's involved in changing a 3406c from front sump to rear sump oil pan? Thank you.
