Please NO DD 2stroke bashing, if don't like em SAY NOTHING !

Anyone out there running one as a working truck ? Or Fans of them please post
I know we have a few here in ND oil fields, plenty still powering rigs and generators

I'm a Heavy Haul - Rig Mover been running companies KW C500 / T800's Cats & Cummins, fuel mpg is not sure a big concern. None of the current Acerts or ISX's get an more than 3.5 mpg even when they are empty.
So after much searching for a heavy spec affordable truck I've bought Autocar w/ silver 8v92TA.
I plan gear it for 60 - 65mph @ 1900 rpm in direct ( 1:1) for max speed When loaded, hope to have around 600+ bhp once upgraded, still researching spec's for high power output

Ehh, 8V92T is not the best choice. 6V92T, 8v71, 12v71, 6L71, etc. The 8V92T's from my experience got horrid fuel mileage and have mechanical issues, depending on how the owner took care of them previously. Cooling, after market parts, the wrong oil(15W40 instead of SAE 40) didn't help either.

Just feed it rod and main bearings every 150000 miles. When right they will RUN.

Loads I hauled averaged over 75K and the engine ran fine, gross around 110-125K.

If it can pull that then it was a good motor

I have an 8V71N and a 6V92T both in my bus collection, both equipped with 740 Allisons.

Ran a 475hp one for a while hauling grain, it wasn't in the same ballpark with the big cams and mechanical 3406s we have now.

Good old 2 strokes. They could rev at 2100 all day and never miss a beat.

FWIW, the engine sound from the Rubber Duck's Mack was not of the Mack engine it was equipped with but of a 8V71 as the director felt that the 2 stroke sounded "tougher" than the 4 stroke Mack.

Out in Horizon, TX near my company's terminal there's an old Autocar tow truck that doesn't appear to be used very much. I'm guessing early to mid 70's vintage. Would be a neat restoration project.

I occasionally ran a mid 70's KW with a 475 and a 13 over. Couldn't pull with the 425 Cats, but on flat ground with her legs stretched, they never stood a chance. (Neither did your eardrums!):biggrin_2559:
