I'm driving a UltraShift now for the last few months. I don't dislike it, but it could be better if I was allowed to reprogram a few things in the ECM.

I don't like the way it goes into neutral at low speeds when coasting. I like to use the engine's compression to keep the truck moving slowly when going down forward and especially when backing down a grade. Bobtail, deadheading, or loaded it will always start out in 2nd unless the load is really heavy. I would like to start out in 4th when bobtailing and maybe 3rd when empty. Starting in 2nd takes forever to get through any intersection. I can run across the street faster in bare feet :)

Also, the centrifugal clutch is annoying. I need to be careful when in stop and go traffic as I'm climbing a hill. There's a fine line from slipping the clutch to full lock. I usually know when it's slipping, but if I'm not careful it'll overheat and won't let me go anywhere. This happened to me once as I was trying to get into a tight garage door. Once I start gassing on it, get out of my way 'cause I don't like to stop ;)

What's the year of the truck with the ultra because as it looks is the the old one, up to '09...... not the 2010 updated ultra shift plus....and now there is even one coming by fall that is tide up to work with the ISX's ECU...NO MORE TORQUE COVERTER since the plus came out in '10......
Like to hear about the ULTRA SHIFT PLUS BOX with 13 MHP opinion ,a truck built after 2010 and isx....if posible..cause am looking to get one....

About I shift it may be acceptable because 14 y ago while in west europe i get to drive SCANIA the other swedish OEM with a very like i shift trans for 4 years over THE ALPS all over forth and back with perfect box.......Now i bet the 3/4 of the US drivers with Ishift do not know about the kick down accelerator pedal...and what it does......same think that i had in the scania.... volvo was just dreaming about the auto box at that time......manual 12 sp only.:biggrin_25522:

actually volvo had geartronic than i think from 1998 or 1999 not sure

in the meantime we have now 5th generation of opticruise it is still based on manual gearbox with syncros but improved

you probably experienced some problems with it like when you are approaching red light and put it in to neutral if you get green light before you stop there was no way to put in in any gear even manually , you probably experienced problems in roundabouts or in serpentines

since 9/2009 opticruise get fully automated version without clutch pedal , it uses electro-hydraulic clutch actuator , shifts are no longer done with floating but it use clutch on every shift it is pretty faster than version with clutch especially spitting gears now it is at least 2timmes faster

here you have some of features now included

Now the technology does go forward and no way to keep up not even with the flat screens, they get updated and better every year
I leaved 10 y in spain 93-03 when i left to USA, had scania 144L 460 opticruise no idea wich generation with little stick lever on the dash that by putting it on manual ,had to move it right to go up and left go down on speeds....truck/box had the clutch for start/backup move.....it had the kick down option same as ishift now, that many here still to discover on their trucks that was keeping the engine revs at top 1800 rev/min so using hp band of engine not the torque...
In 4 years 98-03 never ever any problems but 2 autobox fuses burnt by causes unknown by many at the begining...when truck didn't change gears the fuse whent down, but always at the stand still never in road driving.......
What realy liked in europe trucks is the intarder((best by a lot over alps than volvo's jake brake)) option...
Now after 10 y here cannot believe how small the cab's zero space is there....even with the flat floor......

reja , yes they still drive both father and son , but they are no longer fast as before after many crashes and violating all speed and hour limits they get on black lists in all countries

they run now nice fleet of r560 and mirofret reffer trailers with curtain on left

    I bought a late 2005 FH12 420 on an auction in 2008.
Didn't look properly and just assumed it was a I-Shift when they said it was automated transmission.
Turned out to be a Geartronic unit.
Not a touch on the I-Shift , and gives its share of issues.
