Red Top is the nickname of Cummins N14 Celect+ 525E engine. It was available in HP settings starting from 460 to 525. The name comes from its Red valve covers. In my opinion the best diesel ever built.

Red Top N-14 had top covers as castings painted red, was the visible identification for the higher horsepower of 460 up to 525 available from the factory.

Earlier high rating ones didn't have the red covers. Not sure when it started.

not the best engine with fuel milage, but very reliable, better any ISX and relativelly cheap to maintane. In ex-USSR it was beloved engine, was used in MAZ and KRAZ trucks... but unfortunatly it was dsicontinued in 2000 in EU and in 2002 in USA, becouse of emission laws

Red cummins engines are a fairly recent change. Pre-ISX/ISM they were black. So a Redtop would be black with red valve covers.

N14's were never fuel hogs. Speced right they approach pre-egr Detroit mpgs pretty easily. I regularly got 7+ on a tank in a mid roof 9400 with zero aero aides while pulling heavy dry van and reefer.

The red valve covers are an option nothing more, it is a cast aluminum valve cover, instead of the steel covers like the older engines, avalable in every HP avalable. It is not a code for anything except less chance of leaking.
    Just a thought!

    I got a stable 7.5 mpg on reefer pull with 500hp n14 @ 1350 rpm @ 62 mph witch is not bad imo .
