i would like to hear some opinions on the project whether to start it or not :
2000 peterbilt classic with 18 speed and c16 600hp from the factory :
i currently have 3 trucks (letting go my kw900 to the driver)
would like to have really nice clean truck for myself to drive if from time to time
dealer recently replaced head gasket and notified the owner that he needs overhaul , tranny got new clutch , suspension done .pretty much what i know about truck
paint work in poor condition , frame is somewhere rusty
i have an idea of building 700-800hp truck , nice paint and interior
considering high quality parts and labor :
how much it can cost to complete it i am guessing at $60k
appreciate everyones input

I'll be able to chime in one the frame, as I am in the process of replacing the frame that runs under the cab. I went through all my receipts and total for all materials so far is $350. I have spent many, many man hours doing this though. Also tomorrow I'll be replacing some air lines and touching up the chassis while the truck is still raised up.
My goal is to have a show quality work truck. Last I was aware there weren't many Sterlings in the show aspect, so I have my work cut out for me. Rather than worry about cost (because it will be a pretty penny) I would focus on labor and time. The more that YOU can do, the better you will be. The frame you can do yourself with a wire wheel and perhaps some sand paper. Interior again you can do yourself (I'm working on hardwood flooring and a custom hardwood dash). Paint I would get done professionally (personally I am not a good painter, I tried multiple times on my old trans am and failed each time). Motor overhaul let a shop do, unless you feel comfortable with your mechanical skills. I am waiting to purchase a blown motor and rebuild as I have the time.
Just for the motor rebuild, you're at $20k and up. Paint you can get done for $10k on the high end (I've been quoted at $5k for my truck). If you do all other work yourself, best case is $30k. That's about all I am aware of. Hopefully others can chime in! -
as with most restorations you will probably have more in it than its worth when its done, but if its what you really want then go for it.

its not the same but I have restored abour 3 El Caminos before and I felt like they nickel and dimed to death thats not counting time, just money.
Be sure you know what youre getting to, if you proceed post pics and keep us updated. Good luck -
it is probably going to be long process , i am guessing a year step by step .. no rush , i will have my mechanic do most of the mechanical work , as far as the engine i will be looking for advices from experienced guys here , but all the engine overhaul most likely to be done at CAT dealer , dealer estimated previous owner at 20k for complete overhaul with the head . as far as interior i have seen local guy doing it professionally for about 3k with all the new materials for ceiling , paneling , carpet etc . paint work - kinda tricky was reading a lot of posts about show quality at 40k i don't think i need that , but factory quality with good paint 2 tone

.. how much PITA to replace old style square dash to 2008 and up style , do i need new harness guess not , probably some modification
