if so or even if not, what are the necessary items and/or issues to know or address on an engine w/950,000 +/- miles on it?

    thanks in advance.

2000 was the year of the switch from the E to the C-15. I know the E models had a tendency to drop a liner and require counterbores be done to keep them up against the head (i.e. not blow head gaskets.) At 950K, it's got to be getting close to needing an inframe anyways.

Fellow here in 1999 bought a 1999 Volvo with a CAT 3406E in it. He claims it is at 2million 300,000 miles on original engine. He hauls produce atlanta to la and has a dedicated account. He has been through a few rears, 1 tranny but claims engine is untouched. He does impeccable maintenance as he cannot afford to be broken down somewhere in between a cross country trips.

He recently sold it and bought a brand new 2015 Volvo. He had to, to keep up with CA emissions. He is also retrofitting a new engine on his reefer to be compliant.

I just cut the counterbores on mine for the first time but I'm pushing 2 million miles. I never heard e models drop liners anymore than any other engine out there

The shop that rebuilt mine said it wasn't uncommon for the E's to drop #4 for some reason. I dang sure miss that motor!

yeah, cat claimed it was because of where the coolant flowed into the block from the oil cooler neck. it was usually #4 or #5. so they moved it farther back on the block. guess what the c-15s still would drop the same liners. im guessing it is from the block flexing (for a lack of a better description) and the low specs of liner protrution. no one has ever came up with a good answer yet.

1998 was prolly a 1LW ser. # last of the 40 pin Cats. In 1999 they started installing 2WS ser. # 70 pin .they still called em 3406 E. The 2WS is more akin to the C15 than any 3406.
