What software and connections does one need in order to turn the speed up on a truck. Where can you get these items? I've looked on ebay and different truck sites but no luck finding anything. Thanks.

Speed adjustments are easily done by authorized truck dealers......or are you trying to get around company policy?

So you are telling me that as an individual that I cannot go out and purchase the equipment (what ever it may be) necessary to adjust the speed on a class 8 truck?


Speaking of Company Policy, I think that would be a great category here on this site.

If you own the truck, you should have two passwords for the computer. Give your mechanic the passwords and he/she will set it to what ever speed you want. It only takes minutes and wont cost much.

If you do not own the truck I would not turn it up, since the company will know how fast you are driving.

My particular company has the software to adjust the top speed, top engine rpm, idle speed, shutdown.

Unless you own the truck, it would be considered tampering or sabotage to change those settings. Even lease operators have speed limited equipment, although it is usually higher than company trucks have.

I drove several trucks that looked identical for a company, all with n-14 Celect computers, every one of them drove a bit different with slightly different top speeds, the local Freightliner dealer was the one that adjusted them and unless they were set to run too fast, that company left them alone because it cost to change the settings.

Some of those trucks I would have been glad to stay in, others I wouldn't.

The top horsepower can be adjusted within parameters on these engines in a range that didn't exceed the engine or drive train capabilities. A 370 Cummins can usually be turned up to 435. The 460 Cummins can usually be turned up to 525, I drove one of those once for a short while, it had more than adequate power. It did great for a truck with a 9 speed.

I don't know if it is possible for an individual to reset the truck he drives, I have never done it and don't know anyone that has other than removing alarm settings , which doesn't affect how it runs.

If you had the diagnostics software, proper connector and computer to run the system, you could tinker with your own engine.

You should be able to buy the software and connectors at an authorized shop, or order them online from the manufacturer. I know Cummins sells the necessary hardware (USB connectors, etc) directly from their website to hook up a PC or laptop to the engine. They also offer the software necessary to make changes, which you have to purchase a license authorization to use (the software itself is a free download).

Increasing speed-it's just more fuel to injectors on top gear.Simply you give ECM permit to send more fuel,so you decrease fuel economy(ouch!!!).Also you can void engine warranty(if you have it)

I know for a Cat engine, the dealer will sell you both the software ( Customer version of Electronic Technician) " ET" for around $700 plus the cables and a Communication Adapter ( CommII) which runs around $1200.
So, for $1900-$2000, you ,as an owner, can change your own engine parameters such as vehicle speed etc.
Horsepower changes however require factory passwords and are only available to authorized dealers.
My question to you would be, If most authorized dealers would charge an average of 1 hour of labor at an average labor rate of $100/hr, why would you want to own your own program if you own only 1-5 trucks ?
