Forced In!

I have a small Brooklyn based building supply company with my brother in law. Used to be just the two of us and a crappy van. A few years later, after running our van into the ground, we are about to run all our Ford SuperDuty trucks into the ground.

We've stayed on this side of CDL, but with a new depot and partner in Richmond, VA and a growing LTL bill, we just got a DOT number and I'm starting to shop for beat-up day cabs and flatbed for moving materials between Richmond, NYC and Boston.

We like to burn veg-oil, and I'm a cheap jack..s. I know the value for quality machinery, but I lean towards, slow, cheap, old, ugly, beat-up but reliable. We've had good luck with all our 7.3L Fords. Older Mack CH613's have been catching my eye for no particular reason.

Hopefully I'll enjoy all the pain and pride in doing some real trucking; any advice appreciated!

Older Macks just seem to keep on running. I am sure that if you look around your area, you will find them in abundance, and based on what you say you haul and where you plan to run, they would be a reasonable choice. They do tend to hold their price a little bit better than some of the other trucks of their age, but they tend to run on forever. Take a good look around and see how many older R model Macks are running in your area, and that will give you a pretty good insight into the lifespan of a Mack on the east coast.

Keep in mind when you are buying/fixing up a truck that the DOT loves to pick on ugly, junky looking trucks. Make that old truck look nice and they'll pick on you a lot less.

No, he's in NYC. Below a certain condition, they just ignore the trucks and allow them to go on their way, blowing smoke and leaving behind pieces of old tire. It's normally referred to as the "Container Hauler's Exemption".
