high copper content in oil

I'm interested in knowing if any drivers have recently found high copper content in their oil analysis. Mine started about three months ago, with a reading of about 180 ppm.

I'm not a mechanic and don't know the "right numbers" but isn't high copper content coming from the rods and main bearings breaking down?

I've talked to the mechanics, they seem to think that cat doesn't have copper on the bearings. I've also been told that it could be the oil cooler, air compressor, wrist pins. I heard recently that the oil has been changed to deal with the new motors and that cat in particular has all of a sudden shown copper in the oil, but that it runs its own course and decreases in a few months time. Any one hear anything like that or had a similar experience?

I have a cat and starting about 6 months ago I have seen above adverage copper in my a oil samples. I also have a bypass filter and while I lube the truck and get the oil analyzed every 10 to 13,000 miles I actually only change my oil every 100,000 miles. I did the oil change 20,000 mile ago and the last sample came out just on the high side of normal.

I had talked to a cat shop about the copper levels and they say it has to be the oil cooler but I had it replaced 2 years ago and wouldn't think it could go bad that quickly. I am going to be keeping an eye on it but I am not going to get too excited about it as the levels are near normal since i did the oil change.

We have C-15's in our fleet and we send oil samples out every 90 days. None have come back with copper in the oil.

Other possible cause of High Copper

You can also get high copper readings from the anti-seize compound used on threads when an engine is apart for major repair. It should gradually come back to normal if you sample repeatedly. So, before letting a shop tear into an engine, know the recent repair history.....especially if it's a used truck you recently purchased.

I didn't hear this first hand, but was told that a rep from gulf coast filters was on the Dave Nemo show, and discussed recent appearances of copper in the oil due to manufacturer's changes to oil to meet new standards. Did anyone catch that program, and remember more about it?

would anyone know if the air compressor could be a source of copper in the oil?

Thank you for the responses. I'm thinking that out of all the o/o out there, there are more than just two of us who have had copper in the oil. Any one else have a comment or some helpful information?
