| It's been a while since I looked at this, but while the actual numbers may have changed slightly, the basics are probably still okay. A rebuilt Autoshift transmission was priced roughly in the 6000 dollar range. There were very few places that had te capability to rebuild the actual shifter unit. Since the transmission is basically the stadard 10 speed we have been using for years, that part of the trans (gears, shafts, bearings, synchro's etc....) was basically the same cost as a regular manual trans. But the electro pneumatic control head that did the actual shifting pretty much had to be replaced from the original manufacturer, which bumped up the cost considerably. To illustrate the difference in cost, in general, you can buy at rebuilt 10 or 13 speed, installed, with a new clutch in the truck, and usually pay in the 3000 dollar price range. There are many good things about the Autoshift trans, but you always have to face up to the fact that there are several high dollar components in there that you cannnot repair or replace yourself. Your local mechanic cannot diagnose the problems very well, and probably hasn't the expertise to repair those parts. As much as I like the Auto (and I drove one for 3 1/2 years), if I bought a truck I would not take the chance on one and the risk that it might fail on me. I am very adverse to taking financial risks that I don't have to, and this adds up on that side of the ledger. |
