The power went up but I have not seen much improvement in fuel economy. It also still runs hot about 1100F-1150F and higher if I would let it go higher.
if I pinch the waste gate off it cools it down conciderably to about 1000F-1050F max. It seems to have a lot larger window where it boost strong from 1550-1900 about 34 psi with the gate working and 38-40psi with it pinched off. It still pulls good down at 1400 but my boost starts to drop off below 1550rpm. I haul logs 50-60% off highway grossing out at 130,000lbs on 7 axles. hope this was some help.
I pinched off the waste gate about 3 weeks later it snapped the shaft in the turbo due to overloading.Quickly put it back together then rang CAT told them I had now idea what happened the turbo was only 4 months old.But my was working the same as you have described yours.

By chance was your turbo that snapped the shaft making sort of a sound like the engine had a miss when it was at its highest boost levels? Mine did last week and I took the turbo off because I expected the hot housing to be cracked again and found that not only did the housing have small cracks in the corners but the exhaust manifold center divider was sort of bent to one side. The mechanic said that would take my turbo out eventually because it creates a uneven back pressure on the turbine. Changed all three peices of manifold and put on a new 6NZ turbo which is the same as my old MBN turbo except that the waste gate line comes off the cold side of the turbo instead of being connected to a line that runs all the way back around the engine to a smart wastegate controller. New turbo boosted a little bit more than old one but still liked to warm up so here I'm back to pinching the line off again. Oh one other thing the old turbo started sounding like I had a jet engine under the hood sometimes when it was spooling up, more so when the air was cool. It was doing this long before I pinched the gate off, but the new one does not make this sound. Also it fixed the the sound like my engine was missing at full boost.

No it never made any strange noise or miss untill it broke,I have gone through a total of seven turbos most of them is due to the spring in the wastegate itself going soft and making the wastegate open to soon causing the turbo to overspeed thus making it run hot.I have had 2 turbos go from the manifold inserts breaking as well,I have no problems now because I have no wastegate best thing I ever did.You will still over load the turbo by pinching off the wastegate line and will break the shaft,The turbo I am running now looks the same as the one on you engine just no wastegate and a lot bigger through the middle as it is a ball bearing type I can give you the part number if you like so you can price it up?

Even on #7 and a turbo upgrade they are not all that, most guys dyno 660-680hp with them. A ecm with a some FLS and FTS changes, turbo upgrade, wires, and trim codes will beat that and be bale to do it all day long. Dont even have to get bigger injectors.

Freddy im not bad mouthing the box, i think its great for someone who doesent want to play much with the motor and enjoys a SAFE 50-100hp upgrade on level 3 or 4. So dont take it the wrong way please.
No worries. Unofficially we have pullers that compete in Canada which will remain nameless that lift their steer axles off the ground by "stacking" three boxes together in addition to other mods. The engine only lasts a few pulls. These guys must be racing for "pinks" or something. The box is not designed for this is not something we can recommend or warranty what so ever but we know its been done.

Jerry's newest turbo is one of his special projects. Not sure if it's going to be for sale or not.

we usually test with non-wastegated turbos. Thanks for the info. I'll pass it on to the ECM guys and see what they say.

That C 16 must be a beast to break the turbo shaft.

3406E and various C 15s that I know of have the waste gate vacuum tube completely unhooked, not just pinched and none that I know of so far have broken any thing.

Yes please I would like to know what turbo you have, will it bolt right on or do you have to mod the oil lines or anything. The noise I spoke of with my turbo only did it when I was boosting up around 38psi it didn't make the sound when I kept the boost below 36 psi. The other noise that sounded like a jet engine was there at lower boost pressures though. When you put your latest turbo on did you change the exhaust manifold?

Has anybody ever taken off the smart wastegate /fuel filter housing on a MBN. I can see that there is some kind of solinoid in the back of it and I'am wondering if I could controll the wastegate by powering up that solinoid?

I've read where people have put these harness's on the fuel temp and on the boost sensor but I haven't read where anybody has done the ambient air temp. Around here most the guy's have that one as well. Don't know how much of a difference it makes to have the air temp one though, but it is a .218ohm resistor that they use for it. I had both the fuel and air temp on but I took them off because it was to hard to keep the exhaust temps down.
