How come semi-trucks don't have heavy-duty Auto transmissions?

I bet it will let out the burden of shifting all the time. I bet a company could make a 15 speed Auto trans or something..

This could be irrevelent but, on the F-250 and Dodge Ram, a heavy-duty automatic is prefered over the manual for towing for their diesel engines.

Thats pick up trucks, were talking real trucks here. A manual un synchronized old school dog box like we use is the absolute best and most reliable..... They do make automatic transmissions but they are for rookies

They already have automatics in heavy trucks...

Just not as popular as the manual versions. Seems many truckers don't trust them just yet.

Automatic Transmissions are for people who can't walk and chew gum at the same time.

gear shifts are for drivers who don't go around Atlanta, D.C., or L.A.

the truck I'll start driving next week with my new job is an ultrashift. no stick, no clutch pedal. I drove a 10 speed the first 7 months of my career. have had an autoshift or ultrashift ever since then. I have absolutely NO desire to go back to a manual. most fleets are going to autos. eventually, it will be a rare occasion to see a manual transmission in a truck.

^^^ I doubt 99% of O/Os want automatic trannys, reason why big companies are going with them is because like some one already said, they are hiring people who cant walk and chew gum at the same time LOL. Im not talking bout you but you know what i mean. I would like to see a automatic stand up to my 802 wheel hp and 2900lb-ft torque my CAT puts out....... yeah ill take my double over 18 speed

I think I read somewhere that some trucking companies actually order manual trannies because automatics aren't popular with the better drivers and they would've had problems attracting them if they order autos.

there is no difference between an autoshift and a manual transmission except one has a stick to change gears, the other has a computer controlled system to shift the gears. with an auto, you're a LOT less tired at the end of the day. some "better" drivers may prefer a straight drive. and some companies offer a choice. a lot of old timers say they would never like an auto. we had some old timers at my old company who used to say they wouldn't like the auto.....until they got one.

a popular misconception is that autos will attract people to trucking who otherwise wouldn't do it because of not wanting to drive a manual transmission. folks, there's a lot more to being able to be a trucker than just learning to move a gear shift around.
