Pete vs Volvo

I am buying a truck in the next day or so and I have some questions. Looking at a Pete 389 with a Cat C15 for $113,000 and a 63" sleeper. How much better gas mileage will I get with a 386 or 387 aerodynamic cab pulling 53' dry vans?

Also looking at a Volvo 670 and and International Prostar 73" sleeper. The Volvo has a 485 Volvo engine and the Prostar has a Cummins. Pros or Cons to any?

Any advice is appreciated here.

Geoff

I see this thread going far lol.

Heres is my OPINION, if you want reliability get the 386 with the CAT, if its 07 or older with pre emission motor. The prostar and volvo well, im sure they are great trucks but the reliability wont be there, especially if you do your own maintnance.

A bunch of you guys are going to bash me but I will say the 386 or Prostar is your best bet. Also, take a look at a Freightliner with the new detroit diesel. All can get good mileage depending on gear ratios and how the engine is spec'd out.

Gpoe, got a picture of a walmart prostar:

I personaly think a T660 or 386 is better as paccar products hold more value and these can easily achieve 7.1 mpg+ when equipped. The international may look better but to me it seems like a car due to the dash layout.

With the price on the 389 it is probably new, and if not new will have the accert engine which I havent heard much good about. If it was me, just looking for fuel mileage and all were new then would go with the prostar.

The old cats can get a good fuel mileage but I havent heard many people say anything good about the accert engines. The pete will give you a better resale but if you put the numbers to it the prostar or the volvo will probably get about a half mpg better. On 120,000 miles and at .5 mpg based on 5.5 for prostar and volvo, and 5 for the 389 thats almost $10,000 a year.

I will probably get bashed but right now on a new truck I myself wouldnt go with an accert.

To tell you the truth the Prostar and the 386 get about the same fuel mileage, give or take .2 mpg. That is over a 2,500 mile time period for both trucks. I haven't seen a 07 emmisions or newer truck with fully loaded trailer get 7 mpg. Somebody please prove me wrong with hard facts of personal experience.

Also I talked about fuel mileage earlier but I didnt go that way. I went for looks and got a W/S. A lot of people think they are ugly but I like it.

Hes not asking about a 389, hes asking about the 386 which is a aero truck. 07 or older accerts are fine, the new 08+ are the nightmare.
