Certain Mack engines exempt from idling limit

Mack MP7 and MP8 engines have been certified to meet California limits on emissions of nitrogen oxides while idling, which means truckers running those engines aren't subject to the state's five-minute idling rule that took effect earlier this year, Mack announced.

According to California Air Resources Board regulations, which other states are considering emulating, trucks with engines that emit 30 grams or less per hour of NOx are not required to shut down at five minutes and can continue to idle.

Mack customers now have the option to specify "Idle Emission Certification - CARB 08" for MP Series engines built after Jan. 1, which means the truck's engine has been certified to meet the 30 gram/hour NOx limit. A CARB-required decal affixed to the the truck's hood is proof of certification.

The new MP10 engine, which goes into production later this year, also will be able to meet this standard, Mack said. MP10 customers can order this specification from their dealers now.

"This feature gives Mack drivers the ability to idle their engines as needed, while still emitting extremely low levels of NOx," said David McKenna, powertrain sales and marketing manager for Mack, based in Lehigh Valley, Pa. http://www.etrucker.com/apps/news/article.asp?id=68921
