For sure.

I've got roughly $9000 in one that I helped install. $7000 for purchase and another $2000 for install and install parts. Labor, AC hoses, heater hoses, wires, AC charging etc etc.

the only way I see the big co.'s putting on APU's is if the idling ticket went to the OWNER of the truck. But of course this wouldnt stop the co. from just outlawing idling in their trucks. I already told my wife that if my company ever disallows idling, (without giving me an APU of course) i'm done. I wont be unsafe so they can make even more money. And yes, I do realize that that is why they are in business. I dont have a problem with them making a profit, just not at my expense or safety!

It only doubles or triple the cost.

Mandated car insurance is living proof of that.

I think the truck manufacturers should put electric heat and A/C in trucks with diesel generators, so when we have access to shore power we could plug it, when we don't have access to shore power we run the APU.
It would be alot cheaper than systems like Idle Aire, most of us have telephones, internet access, television, & most of the crap Idle Aire tries to sell us. With electric heat and A/C all we would need would be a twenty or thirty amp electric outlet. We could run our heat or A/C for about fifty cents an hour.
Now we have several companies making APU systems that require running the APU to run the A/C compressor, only one or two have the option of useing shore power.

Using shore power makes the most sense to me. You would have to pay too park but I don't think it would be very expensive since all they are providing is electricity, unlike idle air.

With the exception of idle aire please tell me how often you find a hook up to "shore power".

In my time of OTR I only know of ONE TS that has 110v hook ups in some of the truck parking. Its in ND and was installed for winter, plugging in the block heaters.

I should have stated I was predicting what I think we will see in the future. As you stated, you will not find many electrical hook-ups at truck stops at the present time.

In terms of installation, how difficult/expensive is it to retrofit a truck to use 110V power for heat/cooling/acc vs an APU?

Isn't the shore power you are refering to like the ones you see boats hooked up to? If so, I'd imagine you would need: all weather cable and connector plus an overhead, underground or above ground ground system.
