Mandatory APU's

What would it take to make APU's mandatory on all OTR trucks? Do you think this would be a good thing? I wouldn't mind using one and saving the engine and fuel. I think the price they want for those things is ridiculous. You can buy an air conditioning system for a building for the price they want for something that's about the equivolent of a window air conditioner.

Eventually APU's will become mandatory. The rate they are pushing no idling laws. Something is going to have to give. They can't expect drivers to sleep comfortable for 10hrs with no a/c or heat. Someone someday is going to realize this is a safety issue.

it will take the truck manufactures making them OEM off the factory line but if you look at the cost yes very pricy up front but at idle you burn about 1 gallon an hour most apu's only use .2-.3 gallons an hour at nearly $5 a gallon it dose not take that long to recoop that investment not even taking into account for saved ware and taer on the truck and remember that most of the apu's contain a stand allone engine to provide power, a heat source of some sort for the winter and an a/c source for the sumer so that 5k-10k is buying a bit

Better hope for APU.

Can you even imagine a company paying for a room? I have had some that would not even pay during a break down.

Oh I have worked for company that want you to get a motel every night. the sleeper is when you were stuck at a job site and couldn't get to a motel. I got $45 for every night I spent in the truck or they paid for the room.
