Thumbs down Cummins to use SCR System

Well while at work today I was recently discusing a trip for the company and found out something very interesting. Cuumins announced that they are going to use the SCR system on all engines in 2010. This includes Heavy Duty (ISM, ISX) and Midrange engines (ISB, ISC, ISL). Looks like everyone will have to get use to using urea. On the other hand Cummins announced a few years ago that it would not have to use the SCR system to meet the emission standards of 2010. Looks like they can't do it. Something I knew was going to happen. So bring on the synthetic hog urine.

So without futher waiting, here is a link to said announcement.

EGR ain't working, cooled or not, and then you have to come up with a bigger engine to deliver the ponies. If it gets better mileage on fuel, it might actually be worth the cost.

the problem is that this "cow pee" freezes below -11C and without it ,the exhaust
will be very dirty in terms of NOx.

So you install a "pee heater" and this will give you an excuse to idle. I'm sorry officer, if I shut down my pee will freeze."

Here in Europe the road police is suposed to check the content of SCR tank, but i dont now how, smelling? Will they be able to differ SCR liquid from urine? Also the engines will derate themselfs if the SCR tank is empty ,but there is no chemical content sensor so teoreticaly we can use the tank as a toilet.

This is good news then ... it ought to help clean up the truck stops, rest areas and Oregon.

Disclaimer: I have nothing against Oregon, just referencing a recent thread about too many urine bottles along the highway in that beautiful state.

In Europe Scania and MAN are using EGR for EURO 5 emission class and in Scanias it´s working fine and MANs quite fine. Scania has developed their new XPI fuel injection with Cummins so why Cummins cant get EGR working?

It is also quite easy to cheat both SCR and EGR (or ACERT) so that you can throw those filters or catalysators away and not use urea. If done right they cant see it in OBD-test.

A few items:

* International still plans on using EGR.
* Cummins chose SCR due to a 5-7% gain in fuel economy over in-cylinder 2010 designs using the latest SCR technology advances
* Heat rejection numbers have been scaled back to 2007 levels instead of the super high 2010 levels.
* SCR dosing can not be defeated, the EPA has mandated OBD-II and severe penalties in terms of derates and shutdowns (if the urea tank is down around 2% you won't even been able to pull a trailer, much less a load), at 0% the only way to move the truck will be to get a wrecker, fill it up, and clear the codes. Make sure to thank CARB and the EPA on the way.
