I would like to know what people think of the pre-DPF c13 accert cats. We have a bxs C15 and we are looking for another truck, but the boss doesn't want a c13 but there are more 13's out there to choose from. We would be looking for one with at least 430hp and up to 470 if they are reliable. Also what are they getting for MPG's?

They are pretty decent for fuel mileage (I always averaged around 6.7 overall), but totally gutless with that Acert program. The turbos are horribly slow to kick in, and if your truck isn't warmed up beyond about 160 degrees good luck getting a heavy load moving. The C12 was a much better motor. New Cat C13's, even pre 2007, are only designed for fuel mileage. So screw it if it takes your truck 5 minutes just to get up to 65 MPH. If you could find one that is in fact turned up to 450+ HP or find one with at least a 13 speed you may actually have a real machine. With a 10 speed they are SSSLLLLLLLOOOOOWWWWWW

The C13 does a good job, especially in tanker( Wayne Transports, Kane Transports) and flat bed operations like Decker. "B50" life to overhaul according to Cat is 1,000,000 miles with proper maintenance( same as the C15). Mpg is generally a little better than the C15 ( Smaller horse eats less hay).
What's your application? How important is mpg? -
Well mpg is always a factor but for us we generally like the big bore engines. We haul 53ft dry vans that are almost at 80k going out and coming back. I have heard both sides to the mpg question with the c13's. I heard that they can get better mileage, but i also heard that common sense would tell you that a smaller engine has to work harder to do the same job, so i guess it can go both ways. Most guys like wayne and kane spec 13's for lighter weight as well cause they are hauling bulk materials. Its kinda funny how engine mfg's rate most engines B50's at 1mil, but most engines never make it that far.

A 13 spd. would be my choice behind any engine. The c13 is slow to wind up but I found that if you just crack the throtle after a gear change and wait a second or two for turbo spool-up then squeeze on the pedal it really comes to life. If all you do is shift and mash then it wont pull or get any mileage.

I have a 2002 pete 379 short hood with a 2006 cat c13. In my opinion, the thing has plenty of power. (rated at 430hp 1650ftlbs). I do have a bit of an issue with the fuel mileage. I get anywhere from 5 to 6 mpg depending on the wind mostly. I am very careful with my foot on the throttle and I am always trying to stay out of my boost as much as possible. I haul gravel locally and don't run in the winter. I am 80,000 one way and about 29,500 on the way back.
Just throwing in my 2 cents for anyone who is curious.2013Maxx Thanks this. -
My C 13 is a KCB-accert,runs nice,now 972k,good mpg @6.5 and up,I have 500Hp

Uh, you only had to read 10 words into my post to see that I said my 02 pete has an 06 engine in it. Its a c13 for sure.

How come it has c-13 on your pete? Could have place c-15 6nz. I would prefer c-12 over c-13 and have 13 sp manuel.
