Cruise Control Cuts Out

    05 Volvo with an 870 model ISX Cummins. Cruise control works only intermittently.

    Today while attempting to activate the cruise control it took several attempts to get it to actually "catch" and for the cruise control to engage. Each time I attempted the CEL came on, on the dash, and the cruise failed to take over.

    When I finally got the cruise control to actually kick in, I then noticed I could not advance or ###### the MPH of the truck with the push button switch. As soon as I would hit the button to speed up or slow down, either way, the CEL light came back on, and it killed the cruise all together. I would then have to shut the cruise switch back to off and start all over.

    The vehicle ECU codes read: MID 144. PPID 71. FM 14.
    Cruise Control and Retarder Switch Supply Electrical Fault

    I am going to pull the steering column apart and look for obviously chaffed or shorted wires. Can anybody help on what else to look for? Also, where is the Retarder Switch Supply located? I will also double check fuses.

    Oh, and if anybody can help me decipher these codes, or a link to look them up? I would greatly appreciate it. I assume these are related to the VECU / Volvo, and not Cummins?

    Cruise kick out like that are usually cause by conflicting inputs to the engine ECM. It is seeing things that don't make sense like "Set/accel" and "resume/coast" at the same time. You will have to get the code from the engine, but all the wiring related to cruise control, engine brake controls, (speedo may be involved too), is all Volvo. Your problem could be anywhere. A Volvo dealer would be where I would start with. If you can get a Cummins fault code, I can help better, the Volvo ECU code means nothing to me.

    Well bummer, the only engine code I come up with is related to the clutch fan, will have to deal with that one soon too. I am guessing they aren't related, but ya never know. My time spent tracing wires netted me zilch, and with out a service manual I cant even do pin point tests. GRRRRRRRRR.

    I guess I will have to swallow my pride and take it to the dealership...

    Yah, I know how you feel. You pretty much have to use service manual and wire diagrams these days. You will waste a lot time just searching blind. I work at an International dealer, and one of the worst things a customer can do is bring a non-International make of truck to us to diagnose an electrical problem that is specific to that make. Trucks are all wired differently, the wires are number/colored differently, pinned different, rounted different, and so on! I can trace any wire in a Prostar, but a Volvo, I wouldn't know where to start! We will spend some time at it, but mostly we will stop and just a call the dealer of the truck and get the wire diagram. With an electical problem that is specific to your make of truck it is very advisable to always go to the proper dealer.

    According to the code you have in VECU, its not on the engine side where the problem is taking place.....whats the last six in your VIN to give you specific troubleshooting.

    Just a quick question, does your speedometer ever cut out when your cruise won't work?

    No, it hasnt done that yet. I did take the truck to the shop earlier today. Will report back if, and when they figure something out.

    I have a cruddy feeling this is going to cost my a small fortune and they WONT get it fixed, just a feeling I have...

    Ok, I was just wondering. Had a truck that the cruise would cut out. But, not only would it stop working, the speedometer, and tripmeter wouldn't work either. It turned out to be a magnetic speed sensor in the tranny.
    One thing about that, since the speedometer didn't work, the truck wasn't governed to just 65. I don't know how fast I got up to , but when I started passing people that had flew past me miles back, I decided to just get behind one of them and tag along.

    Still waiting to get the truck back... Apparently their Volvo guy has been sick, and since this is a specialized problem they want only this guy working on the thing. I "truly" hope this is a good thing, and I am not sitting around waiting on nothing!
