acert stumbles

i have an 05 bxs 550 that we just did the cat suggested changes to the fuel system. we changed the primary filter base to the higher flow, the new fuel pump and the stiffer spring, and a new check valve. now at 1600 the motor feels like the fuel gets shut off. it pulls great below and above that. any ideas?

You need to put a pressure gauge on the fuel system to see if the fuel pressure is dropping when the engine dies.

Jas is right about the gauge. I doubt that it is fuel related though being that it only acts up at a certain RPM. Paule will be along a little later I'm guessing and he might have a idea.

ok new info. if i put it in the problem rpm range on a hill then mash the throttle it will do its thing a little while then flash a code 93. however the code does not stay active. I know this is the intake actuator for 3&4. the wires and connections look good and are tight.

also on another tangent, I replaced the fuel check valve(the one on the secondary filter base that goes in facing up). should I have changed the bypass valve also? (the one facing back at cab on the base)

I would say that the problem might lay with the IVA code and not fueling since you have great resopnse from the motor at all the RPMs except around 1600. I know that the IVAs have had some problems and there are updated version being sold now. Personally I would go in this direction since the motor has at least flashed a code...by the way if the code isn't being stored how do you know its a 93 code, do you have a CAT display built into the dash?

no I don't have a cat display...yet. planning to add one possibly. I assume the code goes inactive because the check engine light comes on for only a couple of seconds and then goes back off. it doesn't continue to flash like it did when my fuel temp sender went bad. I have been checking the codes using the cruise switch and engine light.

Sounds like its a faulty IVA or maybe a cracked housing. You only get so may chances with IVA faults before it derates the engine permanently until you have the logged codes cleared.
The reason you have only been getting this fault since you did the fuel pressure mods.... the engine bring the IVAs when certain boost, load and temperature conditions are met. Your engine may have not been using the IVAs before you improved the performance by upping the fuel pressure, now it might be getting high enough boost to bring them on but one is faulty.

When my engine did that the problem was one of the cast oil passages for the IVA's had come loose allowing the oil to bypass the o-ring thus causng the CEL to come on.Turns out the rest of them were only finger tight as well.

You said stumbles right? Sweep the throttle position sensor might have a flat spot in the go peddle control.
