Series 60 question

Hope I'm in the right place. Just read this clip from an email, can anyone shed some light on it? My friend here is having a valve lash and injector adjustment done and this is what he sent me. (bold below) His engine has I think, 67K on it. My Series 60 has 147K and never had any adjustments.

According to the tech, who showed me some marks on the cam shaft, S-60's have some wear marks on the lobes they call "flaking" which he says, DD claims is normal and nothing to worry about. Anybody know anything about this? Does not sound good to me.

Thanks

from detroit manual

Note: Camshafts may exhibit surface pits on the exhaust lobes. [LINK POSTED BY MEMBER] Only Members Can View This Truck Forum Link. . Extensive durability and field testing has shown that surface pits on the exhaust lobes can occur early in the operation of the engine. These blemishes do not adversely affect engine performance or the durability of the camshaft and followers. Camshafts with this condition may be reused.

Note: Camshafts exhibiting extensive wear and pitting must be replaced. [LINK POSTED BY MEMBER] Only Members Can View This Truck Forum Link. .

Thank you sir, great info. On my Blue Bird bus S-60 500 hp should I already have had my lash done, and injectors done? I have not noticed any change in performance including MPG difference. I was told if there were no changes in performance I was OK, other opinions differ.

Thanks again

Update:

Today, I had Covington Detroit here in Nashville complete my valve lash injector height adjustments. # 147k all was good. two intake valves slightly adjusted ... No tight ones. Cam looks like new! Injectors set perfect. I watched the whole process.

While they were working on my coach, I received an email from a friend that knew I was getting this done and passed on the following information:

QUOTE:

Slim

FYI - Just got it back from Det Diesel - Put a new turbo in as a preemptive measure. Many of the older turbos with a manufacturing hole in the turbo shaft failed around 100K miles and caused a mess. The DD shop in Canada alerted me to that fact when I had problems with my charge air cooler.

END OF QUOTE:

Dang now what. any comment on this information. We did look at the turbo impeller, looked OK, no stress cracks, oil leaks ... the service manager said it was the older style that have been known to #### out ... he left it up to me to decide. I was quoted about 1,500 to replace??? any comments? I didn't do it..will I pay double later? The turbo is installed on a 1998 Series 60 non EGR

Thanks in advance

that price seems pretty fair to me.. it will be higher if the turbo does come apart. most of the time u have to clean the charge air cooler and all the intake pipes. we also replace the air filter on every turbo that comes apart. it don't matter if u don't see any metal in thier still need to replace filter..

An engine SN or preferably a number off the turbo would help, but if it's a higher HP it'll have either a Borg Warner or a Garret GT47 which can be had for about $800.00-1000.00 new. Call a turbo shop like AirFlo Systems who deals in BG, or ADP turbo who sells/rebuilds everything, or whatever local shop you trust in your area and order one there. In a bus it's a bit more work but still fairly easy swap.
